My alopecia began when I was a teenager, of all times. By the time I was 17 I shaved the last bit of hair off in order to get fitted for a hairpiece.
10 years later I had a boyfriend tell me I was a different person with the hairpiece off. It was that very moment I thought to myself, then what in the world am I doing wearing this high maintenance and uncomfortable thing?
I then weaned myself off my hairpiece by only wearing it during the cold winter months for about a year. I grieved the loss of my hair and learned to be tough on the inside.
Yes, I have to endure comments, and stares and kids asking if I’m a boy or girl. Or why doesn’t she have any hair? Or the cancer stories from misguided individuals. But I am free. I am free from my secrets under the hairpiece. I’m free to be me. And I’m learning how to like me for me and express my confidence everyday.
