Unfortunately, I don't have the answers you are looking for. Some people lose it fast, some over time and others never lose it all. Doctors don't really have answer to why this happens. I would not make your son shave it off if the does not want to. I would support him in any way he needs and that you can. Let him know that no matter what happens he is loved and he is still the same person. I would encourage him to not stop doing the things he enjoys. Teach him how he can educate others about his alopecia.
My daughter lost her hair over a course of a year and we never cut it off. We just accepted her and encouraged her to be herself. Have you contacted the Chidren's alopecia Project. www.childrensalopeciaproject.org. They may be able to offer you some resources, parent chats, help your son get a pen pal and give you some support. I am a group leader for CAP in Boston. It is a wonderful organization. There is no cost to join. This summer they will be having their 2nd Alopeciapalooza. A conference for the kids. It maybe something you should look into...I wish I could tell you it will grow back, but I can't promise that. At anytime your son's hair can grow back. My daughter's hair has grown back. We do a treatment called SADBE. It may be something worth looking into. Cindy
