About Me:
Young adult in the Northeast. I always had very thick hair, enough for three or four heads. I would often wish that my hair was thinner or that I had hair like someone else. I paid no attention when my scalp would itch like crazy AFTER my stylist would shampoo my hair 3-4 times. She urged me to go to the dermatologist and I just thought my eczema was "acting up" and didn't see one until about a year later when my hair started to thin out in the crown area. During an office visit, the dermatologist did a biopsy on my scalp. He called a week later to tell me that I had scarring alopecia, which meant that my body was attacking my hair and that my hair would not grow back. After, he told me that he would call in an prescription for cortisone that would need to be applied to the thin area twice a day after wetting it or come in for injections in the affected area. I never picked up the prescription and he sounded like the teacher in the Charlie Brown cartoons after the words "your hair won't grow back in that area".

I continued to color, relax and wear hair weaves and braids, which only aggravated my scalp and hair more. In 2006, I decided to wear my hair in it's natural state and I noticed that my scalp was less irritated and my hair was healthy. Did that stop me from wearing weaves? NO! In 2008 I started wearing weaves again and this year I relaxed my hair! I have very little hair in the crown area and my hair has started to thin more on the sides.

I am tired of the whole process! I want to shave my head, but I am afraid to because of what society may say. I wish I could go back and tell myself to be happy with the hair you have and listen to the people who are giving you sound advice where your hair and health are concerned.

Lori, That's what I loved about the clippers as well. It hasn't been too cold where I live, but I've been walking indoors without hats since I first shaved my head. I just wear hats outside. Hopefully, you'll get used to the cold soon. :)

Hey Lori. Thanks for the add. Congratulations on your personal project of liberation. Taking control over a painful situation shows us how much power we really do possess. And now you know the truth..... You are still beautiful. With or without hair. Some things you have to see to believe and your inner strength alone is a beautiful sight to behold! Rock on sister :)
