About Me:
I am a 45 year-old Native American/Caucasian female who started losing my hair by the handfuls in September of 2011. In November, my friend forwarded me a link from the Today Show, in which a medical professional was discussing the over-the-counter medication, Naproxen/Naprosyn (also known as Aleve). I learned that, taken in high doses, this arthritis pain reliever is known to cause hair loss, so I immediately stopped (I was taking 3-4 pills everyday, for several years, and the directions state to "take no more than 3 in a 24-hour period"). It seemed that my hair loss decreased significantly, almost the very next day, but there was so little left, that the amount of normal daily hair loss took most of what I had, only not as quickly. At this point, I no longer felt comfortable going out in public without a hat, due to my scalp showing. I then started to lose my eyelashes & brows, along with all of the hair on the rest of my body.
Around April of 2012 I decided to let my hairdresser friend buzz-cut off the last few strands I had left, & eventually just shaved it off completely, so I could tell if there was any growing back. After about a month, it felt like there was a small amount of new growth in a couple of places. A few months later, I began taking the Naproxen again (because nothing else works as well for my chronic pain), but in the recommended doses, alternating with Ibuprofin & Tylenol 3. I then noticed the hair that I *thought* was coming back, seemed to have disappeared once again. I am unsure if the Naproxen is the cause of all of my hair loss, but have been to 4 different Doctors/health professionals who have all been "stumped" by my condition, since my blood tests all indicated that I'm "completely healthy" in all other aspects. I have since accepted my condition, and am now looking to connect with others such as myself.
