I started losing my hair when I was 38 yrs. old. I covered it by moving the part in my hair, then I got it cut short and my very good hairdresser spiked my hair and it looked great until about age 52. Then it got thinner & thinner. Very embarassing at work. I ordered a hair piece and had it colored & matched closely to my own hair. I cannot express to you enough how difficult it was to wear it to work the first time. People asked what I did to my hair. It was so much thicker. (my hairdresser could no longer do good work on a hair piece). One woman asked what I did and I couldn't answer and then she said "well, it looks good". I just wanted to quit and go home and cry. Finally, I found another hairdresser and it looked better & better. That has been since 1994 and now it is 2011. I finally went to a specialized place that is ordering me a wig that looks natural. The owner wears one and I saw it and felt hers. Expensive, but hopefully worth it. Worry about my hair when I go out in the wind. Not that it will fall off, but that it will stick up, because you can't feel if it is sticking up. Always having to touch my hair and check things out. I do have a lot of hair, but not enough on top and I can't cover it anymore. When I get the wig, I am not going to shave my head.

P.S. It will be great to see pics of your wig once you get it. It's an anxious time waiting for a custom wig to be made and the time seems to go so slowly I find.
I can understand why you find it hard wearing cosmetic hair and talking to people about it. It's difficult and I think it takes a long time to become comfortable with and to feel more relaxed about. I have moments of feeling not too bad about it and then other times I struggle. I think you have to do what feels right for you. Not everyone needs to know after all.
