My son Nicholas , whom is now 21 was discovered to have alopecia areata when he was 7. He started losing his beautiful head of hair in patches very shortly after he learned his father and I were getting divorced. We have been to numerous top doctors and tried numerous treatments and things have worked somewhat but then he loses hair in patches again. He likes to shave his head but even then you can see the pattern of where his hair wont grow. He is very educated about his disease and has come to terms with it and he has a girlfriend but deep down I know he just wishes he had a full head of hair. I try to get him to talk to others like him, like in a group, but he wont. As long as he talks to me I'm ok. But we both want to remain educated and help others any way we can.
