- I realized I had alopecia when I discovered a dime-sized patch in the back of my scalp at the age of 16. I have since seen nearly all my hair fall out, wore a synthetic hairpiece for 8 months, grew my hair back for 6 months, lost my hair again when I started college, wore a Locks of Love hairpiece for two years (while shaving any remaining hair underneath), grew my hair out while wearing head wraps for 5 months, enjoyed a nearly full head of hair for 3 years and am now losing significant amounts of hair again. During times when my alopecia is not noticeable, I forget that it was ever a concern. However, whenever I experience massive bouts of hair loss, I feel as though I am going through a long break up, as I watch pieces of hair slip away without my control. Alopecia is an emotionally trying disorder to live with.
When alopecia is not on my mind, I enjoy running, biking, hiking, and great meals with friends and family.

Well, I hope your boyfriend is supportive of the hair situation! It's nice to have a great guy in your life...it certainly separates the men from the boys.
