Other options: is there a support group close to you where he could be around others with alopecia? Check on the National Alopecia Areata Foundation web site: www.NAAF.org. When he feels like sharing with friends, there's also a free "school pack" that the NAAF offers which is great for kids to play for their classmates and teachers. Really makes a difference and increases awareness.
My son wore hair pieces yes. We couldn't shave his head as everyone suggests because there was no pigment color. Looked like a map. Locks of love created his hairpieces until he no longer needed one. He is now 17. Hope this helped.
