My daughter, Rachel, is 10 and has had alopecia for about 10 months now. She is almost completely bald at this point. She does not wear a wig or any headcoverings though she has both. She has been dealing with this so incredibly well that she is an inspiration to all who know her. Today, however, after more than a month of keeping this to herself she told me that on the first day of school this year (which was the only time she has worn a wig to school), the kids were teasing each other and calling each other silly names, when one girl said to her "...well at least I don't have to wear a wig." When trying to tell me this, Rachel was crying so much, she wrote the slur on a page and passed it to me, because she couldn't even say it out loud. At several support group meetings I've been to and when we went to the NAAF convention, I've heard people say that they have prepared, or have taught their kids, all kinds of funny snappy retorts to help them respond to slurs and digs that come their way. If you have one, please share it! Betsy

I'm not really witty, but I'll offer these...

~ I don't have to wear a wig, I CHOOSE to wear one
~ You're just jealous I can change my hair as quickly as you can change clothes
~ I love my wig, it means I don't have to worry about styling my hair every day.

I'm sorry that you're both going through this! I can't imagine dealing with this with the courage your daughter is displaying.
