Mattel to Introduce Bald Friend of Barbie

It's official! Mattel announced March 28 it will make a
doll for children experiencing hair loss, a quantity which will be
donated to the National Alopecia Areata Foundation, as well as to
children's hospitals through the California Hospitals
Association and CureSearch across the country. The Southern
California toy giant describes the upcoming doll as a "friend of
Barbie," and is expected to come with wigs, hats, scarves and
other accessories. Mattel is also making a cash donation to NAAF
in conjunction with the donation of dolls.

I was so so happy to find out they are making a bald barbie doll, but am so upset they aren't selling them commercially! The whole point to making this doll, in my mind, is to normalize hair loss and make it something that all kids growing up know about. I spent so many hours playing barbie with my friends when I was little, and if I had had the opportunity to play with one without hair, it would have made my own hairloss a lot easier as well as my friend's acceptance more normal. To me, it isn't just a way to have children without hair play with a hairless doll, but rather an exciting opportunity for all children to have the opportunity to play with a hairless doll. Wouldn't it be awesome if every kid playing with barbies grew up understanding Alopecia? Let's look at this as an opportunity and make sure that petition gets signatures!

I am a Nurse Anesthetist at Nationwide CHildrens Hospital in Columbus Ohio and can't wait for the Bald Barbie to make it to our hospital:) We have a Dermatology Department and hopefully children who receive treatment for Alopecia will be given the Barbie. I have been thinking about finding out who is in charge of ordering toys for the Hospital to make sure this Barbie is available for our patients. Five percent of our patients are adults too:))
