Early lessons in life have an impact. If you are surrounded by people, even in your own family, who put Hollywood standards of air-brushed, coiffed and "bought" physical beauty as the value of a person, then I guess you will be totally freaked out by alopecia. But if you learn a lesson early on in life, or repeatedly so it stays with you, that accidents, illness, war, or any other change can change the outside but maybe not the inner core of what makes you lovable to someone, then you will be more accepting of your own alopecia and of others' looks.
When I was young, I watched an ooooollld movie called Mr. Skeffington (see if you can find that one). In it, Bette Davis plays a vain woman who loses her looks after an illness. Her husband comes home from Europe blind, which she doesn't even notice as she seeks to find out if he still finds her beautiful. The last scene speaks to love's MAKING one beautiful to another. (Hair loss is also involved in this movie.) Thank goodness I saw this long before my alopecia went rampant! Thank goodness, also, that an old beau told me when I was newly 18 years old that baldness doesn't change love. Thank goodness my family put grades, art and activity before magazine beauty. These made all the difference in my approach.
That is so true. Thank you, you made me think about it. I want to teach this to my children.
Thanks for the inspiration!!!
