Hello all
Any help appreciated in advance
I present as typical female pattern hair loss...Its just thinning on crown center part area...sides and back pretty normal.
I went to several Dr over years mentioned it and they all said AGA.
My loss has been slow and steady..
I started looking into it more seriously this year--long story short i had a biopsy done few weeks ago because i wanted to see a Dr for AGA that will only take patients referred by Dermatologists.
My biopsy came back for Alopecia Areata which shocked my Dr due to my history and how my hair presents even under microscope (the hand held thing they use dont know name)
I had also seen a HT surgeon earlier this year and he also up microscopic examination believed it was AGA.
My Dermatologist did a second biopsy--one week later and 1 inch from first biopsy (same section/area0
it went to same lab
this one came back Androgenic Alopecia no mention of Areata
So i have two differentiating biopsy results one for AA one for AGA and a week apart same section.
Im so confused.
I kind of dont want to do a third biopsy with same pathologist/lab.
if i have AA its a very rare presentation of it...slow, long term, no cadaver hairs, all hair shed is white bulbs.
But if its AGA i dont want to treat it until i know i don have AA because i am afraid of doing something got my immune system and making it worse. (hormone medication is treatment for AGA)
Has anyone heard of someone testing false positive for Areata?
Okay so the pathologist reviews both slides (this was told to me orally not written word and i am going to request he put it in writing) he was over zealous about first biopsy because he saw inflammation but he believes i have AGA...
any thoughts or advice?
thanks
Okay update on my diagnosis for now..maybe it will change i dont know..just keeping this going in case it helps someone in future
diagnosis
androgenic alopecia, early
microscopic description
there are a diminished number of hair follicles in anlagen
an increased number catagen and telegen
and some hair follicles are thin
there is a scant inflammatory cell infiltrate
Im probably going for a second opinion on Monday just to be sure.
Went for second opinion and i do not have Alopecia Areta..
The Dermatologist who is an Alopecia expert this is bulk of her patients and she's also a researcher explained to me what the discrepancy was with my biopsies
So she's an expert i am going with her opinion and advice and treating my androgenic.
So glad i did not inject steroids. Hope that helps someone in future
Thank you for posting. I'm listening!
