I've been wearing a wig now for 1 1/2 months. I've received many compliments from folks who just thought I got a new cut and/or color. Wonderful! HOWEVER, I was not prepared for someone to ask me the name of my stylist (in the middle of a work meeting, nonetheless!). Awkward! I wiggled out of the situation by promising to email the info later. Now I'm hoping she won't call me on it. If she does, I will be honest, but I'd rather not go there.

Next dilemma is to figure out how to get my old head of hair back from the lady I see in my neighborhood. I almost drove off the road the other day when I saw her walking down the street. That woman had my hair! I swear my hair fell out of my head and landed on hers. How'd she do that?!

I find the quickest way to shut someone up when she asks who did my hair is to name the wig shop, which has the word wig in it. I then say, "You can get this look, too!" She never will ask again...

Good one, Rose!

That is a good one Rose!

I am lucky... My best friend's sister is a manager of a hair salon. She knows I wear wigs. If anyone ever asks, I always give them the name of her salon. It is a 45 minute drive from where I live so I don't think they will be going to see her. You could do that. Find a salon that is a drive from you, and give them that name. Or, perhaps ask around to see where someone goes, and give them the name of that place.

One day, I'm going to tell them "oh, you can have this exact hair... it's a wig". :)

Thanks, all. Yes, if I had been thinking, I would have said right at the beginning that a friend cuts my hair, which was true before the alopecia set in. Oh, well. I really don't mind if friends and peers know that I wear a wig if they understand why, and I certainly don't want to make them feel awkward when they are in the midst of complimenting me! What I really want to avoid is LOOKING like I wear a wig, so given the inquiries about my hair dresser, I guess I'm doing ok in that department. :-)

Hey Tracey! Thanks for the accepting my friend request. I have been wearing a wig for about 4 or 5 months & you wouldn't believe the compliments I get from people that have no clue. I accept the compliments & just smile : ) Makes my heart smile too because people don't realize what we really feel deep down inside. I've had AA for about 18 years and it's in the worse stage ever right now. I'm getting ready to see a new Dr. & I just read on a thread about maybe trying a gluten free diet. I'm willing to try anything to get MY hair back.

I hear you, Michelle! I am not giving up on my real hair either, probably because I am having some very encouraging growth happening after a round of prednisone, nearly a year of steroid injections and two months of slathering my head in men's rogaine 2x a day (thank goodness for Costco's Kirkland brand knock off in a 6 pack!) I am sure I will have heartbreak again, but I long to wear my own hair again, even if only for a limited time! Best of luck with you new doc. I recently switched as well and wish I had done so sooner.
