Does massaging the scalp help or is it just in my mind?

Hey all,

So I don't know it it's just my imagination, but I feel like the more I brush/massage the new hairs on my scalp the thicker they become. I used to always hide my regrowth underneath my wig and rarely ever massaged my head unless I was in the shower. I feel like I'm seeing a slight difference...

Has anyone had experience with this? Also, I've heard using some herbs or oils is good, any thoughts?

Thanks for your continued support!

Hi Jennifer!

YES massage is great for the scalp and can help with thinning hair however I am not sure it would help with AA specifically. Massaging your scalp increases blood circulation to the hair follicles and gives them more of the nutrition they need which can help with growth and strength to your roots! It also helps turn over cells quicker ( gets rid of dead skin cells) which helps make your hair healthier. Not to mention it is relaxing & feels good! :)

They do sell massage oil specific for your scalp ( check a health food store or holistic shop) ... although something as simple as olive oil will work too! It can be messy... maybe try in the bath tub ... warming the olive oil and really massaging it in and let it sit for 20 mins or so and then hop in the shower and wash it off.

I have also noticed more salons are beginning to offer scalp massage as one of their services - if you feel like a splurge. ( although having spots all over my head I'm not comfortable having "Strangers" in my hair! so not sure If I would find that relaxing but for some I'm sure it is! ... )

Massaging your scalp is good because it increases blood flow to the scalp and thus helps the hair follicle to get the needed nutrition faster and easier. My doctor recommended it and I try to do that, but I do it mainly because I like touching my fuzzy head:D
There are different herbs that is said to increase hair growth - boiled nettle water (shampoos with nettle) also now I'm trying EMU grease with rosemary, tea tree and other herbs. Can't be sure if it's working because I'm using hormone medication also but I see a few more hairs in my bald patch, the herbs smell nice too:D

I have about 3 or 4 inches remaining. 1.5 on my left forehead and sporadically on my neck area. Right now it's just extremely uneven and I have to figure out how to define my hair line so it doesn't look strange when it finally grows out. Speaking of growing out...it's been nearly five months and I feel like it's growing soooooooo slow...is that normal? I wonder if this massaging idea will have any impact on it. Oh well, might as well try :) Thanks for your comment Mike!
