Okay. I tried it. I went to poetry potluck/reading today with safe church people at a private home and, fortified with Bravery Juice, read my 10-stanza poem (which I wrote during the church service...shhh) about coming out with my bald head. I took the wig off at stanza #5. Applause came at the end, but, surprisingly, there were no questions from the uninformed few about what condition I even HAVE! I kept the wig off, and the rest of the readings just went on with no hoopla. Whew!

Now I will try it (wig removal) at the house of the neighbor in a wheelchair. We had a talk at a small restaurant concert Friday night about trying to date with "challenges," and I ended up joining his group after I graded student papers. (Yes, I take my work to restaurants and coffee houses.) Despite his paralysis, several women danced around his wheelchair with him to a Motown number, me included. It took them all three tries to get me up there, even with a wig on. But you know, if that neighbor can go to every music event in town in that wheelchair, then I can be braver, too. It feels so good to finally find some folk in my age group who I can now join at local events! I plan to go back to hear a different musician next weekend. You never know who can lead you to more friends...or whom YOU might lead to new friends!

I completely understand how Alopecia and it's various challenges can bring good things once in a while.

I'm so proud of you Tallgirl, it took a lot of courage for you to take your wig off.

Keep Dancing :-)

Thanks! I went over to that neighbor's house and took my wig off there, too. He now has me on his Facebook notification list, so I will be aware of many upcoming music events in the area. Last Saturday I met more people at the same restaurant (same duo played), and I am leaving in a few minutes for Taco Tuesday to hear another band. Social life starting!
