Found out my daughter has a severe milk/egg allergy

For those of you who don't know our story... my 3 year old daughter was diagnosed with AA in the middle of April and initially lost about 80% of her hair. We shaved her head and now with all the regrowth, she has about 70% so I would say that is quite significant... just praying it sticks. We took her to see a homeopathic doctor a month ago and did an allergy test as well as an absorption test and we found out that she has a severe allergy to milk and casein as well as moderate allergies to egg yolk and egg whites. If her hair hadn't started falling out I don't think we would have tested for anything so in a way it's a good thing. We have started eliminating the milk and egg from her diet and already I see massive changes in her stool (she has had harder stools than normal for quite sometime). I don't know if fixing this problem will get rid of the AA altogether... or if it still sticks around because it has been triggered. Has anyone had an allergy of some sort and once corrected, did your AA go away? I just can't believe that all her life she has been eating foods that have been bad for her... it's really scary to think what might have happened in the long run if we didn't catch it now! Any advice on any of this is appreciated... thanks!

At 10, a doctor told my parents to keep me away from eggs and some other things. I eat omelettes now, have AT, and am not ready to test peanuts and shrip after some reactions I have had to those.

Hello Jules, It's nice to hear that you've found the allergy, hope it's a real allergy... Where I live the 'food tolerance' test witch is done to a lot of different people show the same results - milk intolerance. Don't want to discourage you in your fight with daughters alopecia. I sure hope that this is a key to a better health for now we can all be happy that alopecia helps us get a lot of tests and find what is not wrong with us (or sometimes what can be better) Please keep us posted if the new diet improves the alopecia sitution. My hair regrew once after I changed my diet (no salt, no baked food, everything boiled and tasteless...) but as you can see I wasn't really happy about the diet + there were other significant changes in my personal life witch could have changed the alopecia situation...
All in all I wish you a happy journey to a healthy happy life!:)

Wow... I had no idea I had to accept comments before having them show up here. I was wondering why noone had commented. Sorry it took we a while to respond...

The test we did was actually a blood test and cost us about $700. They tested almost every food and found that she has a severe allergy to Milk and Caseine, a moderate allergy to egg white and a mild allergy to egg yolks. After her diet change about 2 weeks ago we have noticed a huge difference in her bowel movements. She always had hard stools throughout her life and now they are coming out nice and easy for her. I took her to the doctors countless amounts of time since she was 7 months old to see what was going on with her bowels and they just kept saying the same thing... give her more water and fiber... which we did, but it never improved. In a way I'm thankful that her hair did start falling out so we can investigate and it turns out that was her issue. Her intestines are so beat up that I'm assuiming her body was taking healthy cells (from her hair) and using them towards her intestines. Changing her diet has definately improved her digestive system, I'm just hoping it also imroves the AA. Her hair is growing back nicely.... and i don't see any new spots (however it is hard to tell with all the little spots everywhere) but I'm just praying it stays. Thanks for your replies!

Hi Jules,

How is your daughter doing now? We just got our 15 month old son got tested for a whole bunch of allergies so we will find out next week. I really hope it is some sort of milk/lactose allergy b/c he got alopecia after we swtiched him from formula to organic whole milk after his 1st birthday. He already got tested positive for egg allergy with the prick test.

Are you applying anything to your daughter's scalp? We are applying Mometasone Furoate for 1 month now and havent seen any change so far.

Thanks!!

Hello... unfortunately my daughter lost all of her hair shortly after my last post. It was all gone by September. She has no more eyebrows or eyelashes... she does seem to be getting some prickles on the back of her head now... not sure what will happen though. I think we might actually put her on a gluten free diet for a while and see what happens. Sorry I don't have better news. I hope you find out what your sons trigger is and he gets his hair back. We are always looking to find new ideas on what Alexa's trigger is. We have been applying Hair Up (the formula from Israel) for almost 3 months now and we haven't seen any results.

Hi Jules,
Sorry to hear that. Is she already following a lactose free diet? Gluten may be the next step it seems like. Has she been using anything else besides Hair Up, like anything that her Derm gave her?

Yeah she has been on a dairy-fee and egg free diet since the beginning of August. We have tried a steroid cream for 2 weeks but decided to stop because I wasn't crazy about the side effects. They also perscribed anthralin... but we didn't use it because I did some research online and I didn't want to make her scalp red and sensitive. She is only 3.5 years old... I don't want her to think that there is something wrong with her... and if we keep doing things to her head she may get that idea.
