Where acceptance is all there is!
Well "summer" is over. My daughter was home schooled last year. She thinks she is ready to go back to elementary school.
We live in a time when openness or "coming out" is accepted. This summer she gained a great deal of confidence. Going to public places without a hat or wig. She wants to go to 4th grade without anything on her head! We did manage to stay in contact with some of her friends from previous school years. She is fine without anything on head wile playing with them at home.
But school, is not the same as the grocery store. I have reservations about "exposing all" the first day. Maybe on the the third of forth day. Like a Friday.
As a father, I want to protect my daughter from any possible hurts.
Are there any adult children out there that has had any experience with this first day thing? Thanks

Yes, thanks. I have heard of CAP. Florida has little to offer.
Thank you, Sue M. You are so right on. It is still difficult to find wigs for kids!
I would suggest she wear a cap or a scarf, maybe something with a fun print, or a local favorite sports team. When I was a kid, I lost my hair in kindergarten and in first grade the teacher told my mom that the kids were teasing me and suggested she get me a wig. Well, there weren't any wigs for kids in the 70s that we were aware of and I ended up going with a wig that looked like it was meant for a little old grandmom, gray curls and all. As I got older I was able to get better wigs, I gained more confidence in my appearance. It's a tough call, but if it were me, I'd rather go with a scarf or cap, for the first day. Best of luck and please know that kids are resilient. Get her on the swimming team to help build her confidence of what she can do, as opposed to what she can't.
You may want to get in touch with Jeff with CAP the Childrens Alopecia Project - he started that non profit because his daughter has AT or AU - I am sure he could give you some very good 'real' advice. Best of luck to your daughter and may she have a happy and exciting new school year ahead!
