Hello Family!
In the spirit of TallGirl’s excellent blog on the power of the internet in the creation of our home here at Alopecia World; I would like to launch a blog for creative expression. For those of you who are not familiar with haiku, there are many forms, but the basic format is a small poem that comprises of three lines with a specific structure. The first line of a haiku has 5 syllables. The second line has 7 syllables. And the last line has 5 syllables. As you compose your haiku poem, it’s helpful to count out the syl-la-bles (3). There are no haiku snobs here, all poetic expressions are encouraged and welcomed.

I’ll start off with my tribute to the strength I’ve received at AW to live a “Bald Life”.

I move through the day
Unaware of the staring
I’m glad to be free.

Have fun everyone! Peace and Love to you all.

The comment TallGirl made is sooooooo important - "I am convinced that I have only met my best friends and loves by initially being in situations where I could talk and talk and talk to reveal who I am/they are." We who are so different and 'unexplainable' (its not cancer, there isn't a cure, etc) are fortunate enough to have genuine friendships that aren't based on looks or fitting in. I am grateful that alopecia has brought that awareness into my life!

Carol Ruiz,
I agree. Ahhhhh...and how many of us hide that inner beauty at home. I am convinced that I have only met my best friends and loves by initially being in situations where I could talk and talk and talk to reveal who I am/they are (class, sensitivity group, seminar, camp, church, club, support group, workshop...anything of duration). People of few words, or who talk about only looks, do not last long in my life. Even Christmas cards to them are diminishing. Those who choose to recognize my soul stay. Those with humor and memory, with the ability to solve problems or explore possibilities stay. Even here, some folk are more concerned about OUTER beauty, and only make comments to others about looks. What about our insides? I prefer to love someone from the inside out. This is what lasts, especially at my age.

You will see, dears...you will see.

(now I can't stop thinking in haiku)

What matters is this:
I don't care what people think
I'm still the same - me!

Okay...my first two quick attempts at haiku:

I hold my head up -
No, I do not have cancer.
Thanks for asking me.

Cool air bathes my scalp
Why would I cover it up?
So great to be free!

These are great poems! We are being creative and also having fun while giving each other valuable encouragement and support.
Notice the word "courage" in in the word encouragement. This means we are giving each other courage to accept our beauty no matter what the world may think. We must believe that hair is not what makes one beautiful. It's not what's on our head, but what's in our head and in our heart that counts. We should stop counting hairs, but start counting hearts! Hope this helps someone.

Bald is beautiful
This saying is suitable
Bald is beautiful!

I am not a geek
Because I am very sleek
In fact, this makes me unique.

Can I ever see
the beauty that is truly
hidden inside me.

Thanks for the space, I am having fun doing these little haiku's...used to do them a lot in High School..many, many moons ago!!!
