I agree. Ahhhhh...and how many of us hide that inner beauty at home. I am convinced that I have only met my best friends and loves by initially being in situations where I could talk and talk and talk to reveal who I am/they are (class, sensitivity group, seminar, camp, church, club, support group, workshop...anything of duration). People of few words, or who talk about only looks, do not last long in my life. Even Christmas cards to them are diminishing. Those who choose to recognize my soul stay. Those with humor and memory, with the ability to solve problems or explore possibilities stay. Even here, some folk are more concerned about OUTER beauty, and only make comments to others about looks. What about our insides? I prefer to love someone from the inside out. This is what lasts, especially at my age.

The comment TallGirl made is sooooooo important - "I am convinced that I have only met my best friends and loves by initially being in situations where I could talk and talk and talk to reveal who I am/they are." We who are so different and 'unexplainable' (its not cancer, there isn't a cure, etc) are fortunate enough to have genuine friendships that aren't based on looks or fitting in. I am grateful that alopecia has brought that awareness into my life!

Very true Chris and Tallgirl. The statement is very provocative on another level. How about an Alopecian who has healed enough to no longer perceive the implications of being socially bald? Thank God I no longer feel the hang ups, yet I accept that people I know see me differently now. I'm naturally gregarious, is that over the top now that I'm bald? Should I be aware that how I dress and act in public is perceived differently because I don't wear a head cover? What do you think -or maybe this topic should be another blog?

Very thought provoking Galena.

All I know is from personal experience which is that some people have judged me, but most of my friends and family have not. But now that I am single again and making new friends, I talk about alopecia quite openly because I am more comfortable with it, but I do believe it is going to take a special man (when I start to date again) to see who is on the inside and accept what is on the outside. In a way, I am kind of looking forward to that experience.

Hi. I'm from Haiku 俳句 country Japan.
I'm not sure my haiku makes sense as I feel and correct syllables.
I tried both Japanese and English.

More than Hair
My heart is blooming
By your voice

髪よりも
心咲かすは
君の声
