Recently I went to Disney World and while waiting in line at a water ride at Typhoon Lagoon I turned around and saw a woman my age who I could tell was an alopecian sister. I debated asking her, but finally got the nerve to ask her (I hate when people ask me so I wanted to be sensitive and told her I thought we might have the same condition). At first she seemed taken back when I first asked her, but when she realized we had the same condition we got talking and talked and talked until we made it to the top of the ride. We talked about everything from makeup, wigs, how people treat and react to women with alopecia. She was on holiday from England with her family. It was so great to connect with her--we both have rarely met others like ourselves in person. We had so much in common and she was such a neat lady. Since we didn't have paper and pen--not the sort of thing you carry on you in a water park, we just exchanged first names and I told her I was on Alopecia World and to look me up when she returned to England. So Shawn, if you are out there I would love to be in contact. You were such a blessing to talk to in that short time and I don't think it was just a coincidence that we ended up next to each other out of the thousands of people in Disney World that day.
If anyone here from England knows of Shawn (she is married and has two grown children)--sorry I didn't get where in England, please let her know about the site and encourage her to join.
Anyway, I had a great time in Disney and even got the courage to go without my wig for an entire day! It was so hot that day and the wig makes it so much hotter, so I got creative with some scarves from videos I saw online and it was great! Even my son told me the next day (along with the friends we were with) to just wear the scarves. I love that my son is so accepting of my alopecia. He thinks people who make an issue of it are stupid. LOL! I love when he rubs and kisses my head and tells me what an awesome mom I am. He likes to have his head shaved and put his "bald" head up next to mine and we make funny faces in the mirror together. LOL! I am so blessed.
