There have been a number of blogs / discussions recently regarding various aspects of being openly bald. I thought it would be opportune to re-post a blog I posted on another site a while ago. This provoked a furious reaction from a Marlene Dietrich fan. So please bear in mind that I am a fan of Marlene Dietrich myself, and this is in no way meant to be an insult to her memory. You can find copies of her performing the original version of the song on Youtube, and it is highly recommended.

I have been listening quite a lot recently to the music of Marlene Dietrich, and I must say it is rather good. I was struck by the lyrics of the song ‘Blonde Women’. What has occurred to me is that it would be a very good idea for someone to re-record this, but bring it up to date by amending the lyrics to be about bald women instead of blonde women. For those that have not heard the song the lyrics would be like this:

You'll try in vain, you can't explain
The charming alarming bald women
They fascinate, they captivate
Beware the amazing bald women
Be careful when you meet a sweet bald stranger
You may not know it but you're reaching danger
You'll try in vain, you can't explain
The charming alarming bald women
Repeat

I am wondering who might be the most appropriate singer to do this. Not Britney Spears I think. Well my suggestion would be for Ute Lemper.
Any other contenders?

I have the PERFECT singer - Dee Dee Bridgewater, who I just learned about. (But, she appears to sing jazz, so it's an open question whether she'd be able to do the Dietrich stylings.) She just did a show of Billie Holiday songs here in San Diego (I couldn't go.) I posted a video interview with her:

And here's a YouTube of her singing...there are many:

And, here's one of my favorite Dietrich performances, her breakthrough in "Blue Angel":

Great blog, David!

Thanks Mary. Dee Dee would definitely be a contender. She's greaat, though I've never seen her in concert before. Hopefully she'll come back to London in the not too distant future.

This is such a wonderful idea. A re-recording of this song would be wonderful. I must admit I have never listened to Marlene Dietrich but thank you for introducing me to her. She is wonderful. I agree Dee Dee would be a great contender for a remake. Especially after Mary introduced me to her music.

Funny enough, I've been listening to a lot of Marlene as well. I"ve been a fan of her singing for over 20 years. I'll look up Dee Bridgewater - haven't heard of her. Ute Lemper is another choice. I'm a HUGE fan of Marianne Faithfull - she's evolved into quite the cabaret singer!

Hadn't thought about Marianne Faithful actually, but yes you're right. Very different to the early days, though all the better for it.

I've half expected someone would suggest Lady Gaga. I think not somehow. I did take the trouble to watch (well part of) the Paul O'Grady show performance. Not my cup of tea I'm afraid.
