I have diffuse hair loss and logitudinal ridges in my nails (along with other symptoms of anemia) due to low ferritin levels... I tried Rogaine and it didn't work for me. I can't go on Propecia because I'm a female. I've been losing my hair since I was 12 because my low ferritin, but I never did anything about it until this year at age 22. The reason I tried rogaine was because doctors told me it's genetic (even though everyone in my family has thick hair!) until one doctor did some blood work and found my ferritin level was 8.
So the first month of my "treatment:"
1. two iron pills a day, Feosol CVS bran, 65 mg each
2. 1 to 3 biotin pills a day, 5,000 mcg/5 mg each
3. fluocinonide 0.05% for some folliculitis I keep having
4. every other time shampoo hair with Walgreens Therapeutic T+Plus Salicylic Acid 3% Shampoo
5. got my first depo-provera shot because I was horrible at taking birth control pills every day at the same time
6. nightly scalp massage 5-10 minutes
The second month:
1. started taking 3-4 iron pills a day, at least one of them with a pill of Vitamin C 500 mg
2. take a biotin pill once a week (all these pills are getting expensive)
3. haven't really used the fluocinonide (conserving because also expensive)
4. using Salicylic Acid 3% Shampoo every single time I shampoo, conditioning with head and shoulders dry scalp every other time
5. decided to not taking the depo-provera shot ever again because it can cause hair loss -.- no more oral contraceptives for me >br/>
6. started using saw palmetto.. today is the first day, May 16, it is a complex so the serving size is two capsules and in total they contain: 200 mcg of selenium, 1,000 IU of vitamin D3, and 320 mg of sal palmetto
7. stopped massaging because too lazy/too difficult
I will update in June as month three...
btw after two months of this my hair is still falling out like crazy
and after month 1, my ferritin level went up from 8 to 21 :)
hopefully when I hit 70 it'll stop shedding!!
