Not hair related but still alopecia related - I have spent awhile looking at my nails today, all ridges and flaky, I debate often about getting some expensive 'nail hardener' stuff from the shops, but then think is it just a ploy to spend more money.

I also heard that fake nails help real nails to grow as they don't get knocked, yet I also hear fake nails can ruin real nails. Do I stop covering them in nail varnish to recover? Yet colouring them helps me add to me feeling more female. Do I just need more vitamins of some sort that the alopecia is making me lack? Do I need to bring this up with a doctor? So many questions over my nails...

You're welcome Mar.
My nails were always strong. Never had any problems with them. I've been on the Biotin for about 3 years. Not sure if it contributed to my hair regrowth (about 80%) but my nails are stronger than ever.

After all this I'm going to try biotin I'd never even heard of it until this blog post so I'm glad I posted out of interest how soon did people using it see an improvement? I ask as I'm not really a good pill taker unless I see results? So what is a reasonable test time?

Try and take your vitamins at a regular time so it becomes part of a routine. I take everything with dinner. I would suggest you buy a bottle of the biotin and take one a day till you finish. I have a 90 capsule supply. Buy 60 get 30 free.
Hope it works for you.

Since I was getting the steroid shots at the same time I started the Biotin, I don't know if one helped the other. I'd say it took several months before they really got back to "normal." What I did notice was that my toenails got better, and I wasn't getting shots in the toenails. The toenails started to get the fine lines and got very thin. Once I started the Biotin, they improved within a few months (now they are fine). Hope this helps.

Just to add, the funny thing was that is was my dermatologist's nurse who told me about the Biotin while I was getting the shots. When I asked my derm about it, he said "oh yeah, we did studies about 20 years ago hoping Biotin would regrow hair. They found it didn't regrow hair but it helped the nails greatly." You think he would have told me that while I was getting shots in my fingers? Go figure....

I have to ask having looked into biotin on line - a lack of natural biotin has the same symptoms as alopecia and can even lead to it. Hair liss esp in eyebrowns, eyelashes and poor nails, I'm just wondering I know doctors prob won't read this but is there an actual test to see if body is actually producing enough? I think this as I had alopecia all my life so im convinced that my body is missing something? Anyhow I'm going to get some biotin this weekend and give them a chance... Who knows even if just fix bails :) thanks all for possitive information x
