Tomorrow I've decided that I'm going to transition from my beautiful long curly wig to my short dark straight hair that has been slowly growing back over the last few months. I'm so scared. I hope to think that this is the end of it all (my dermatologist has said my recovery was good) but what if it comes back? It was easy enough to transition to a wig as nobody noticed, but I'm so worried the hair I have now will fall out then I wouldn't know what to do! It would be embarrasing for me to have to switch back into a wig, like I failed.
Big day tomorrow, incredibly anxious.
Well, you have to do what's good for you...not for the screaming masses or mean girls. When mine came back enough, I got a short shag haircut (1970s), and luckily, it stayed grown in from college to my late 30s. I have come to terms with alopecia now, and do not give a hoot about the folk in this small town or their gossip about my hair or my condition. One football dad once hadn't seen me in two years, and had the nerve to say on the bleachers at a son's game, "Gee, we thought you were dead by now." (He assumed cancer. STILL rude!) You have to consider what you want to portray to others. Pretend it is your own hair? That eliminates sudden short-to-long options (maybe have a short wig, like your own hair, ready-to-go in case you ever need it.). Fashion or mood? Then anything goes. Just want to play with people's heads? Intentionally make crazy transitions and do the unexpected to confuse them. It is all in your attitude and belief in yourself. The others are not worth spit!
By the way...you haven't failed. You are doing what you need to do for YOU, and that takes moxie! Good luck, have fun, and take your new "do" to a Superbowl party to "test drive" it!
Why would it be embarrassing if you lost your hair? You have alopecia. Unfortunately this disease knows no rhyme-or-reason. Your hair can grow back and stay; your hair can grow back and go the next week; your hair could never grow back. I've not heard that there is an "end" to alopecia. So if your hair goes, where your wig again, or get another wig, get a few wigs, change your look up. Don't be scared; you're still "you". You'd be surprised how many people would accept you if you let them. You are not alone. We're all in this thing. Love yourself.
Thank you guys so much. I'm all dolled up and ready to face my first day without my wig and you've given me great confidence, I feel like this is a new start and I'm finally truly accepting who I am :)
Hi Laura, I think your photo is lovely and you'll rock a short straight style! think Emma Watson! All right, she's like - 20 - but so what! You look beautiful! go for it!
Go for it! You are you! Be your best! NOW!!!. I have wigs.. they all are about the same color ,,....I cant wear long wigs I look like a "Bank Robber". My wigs are not Human Hair, so I stay away from the oven during Turkey time. If it is over 100 degrees I wear a scarf.
I am new here. I am looking for new friends with Alopecia. I DO NOT HAVE HAIR.
I guess my decision was made easier by the fact that once my hair started coming out to the point I couldn't hide the bald spots, it very quickly went to total head, then total body (universalis). Having no hair, I had to choose between being physically miserable in a wig (which I was - happy for those of you who can wear them), or emotionally uncomfortable being seen bald. I chose physical comfort and am now completely okay with how I look. Good luck and just take it a day at a time and try not to worry about what's going to happen. I'm proof that if the "worst" we fear happens, life goes on and it's really the least of my problems.
Hi Laura.....
you look fab in your profile pic and I think you will totally be fine when you go out without your wig :) If anybody asks, you tell them you've just gone for a new look :) and if the hair starts falling out again, YOU will notice it before others and then you can deal with it (having a short wig or wearing your funky scarves) How many women without any form of alopecia do you know that change their hair colour/style reguarly? Good luck and hope it goes well for you...
how did it go? i've been hairless. wigless and hatless for a few months now. it will grow back gorgeous for you and you will soon notice how strong this experience will make you (=
