Hello everybody...I have a 4 year old son who has Alopecia Universalis. My family and I had never heard of this condition until my son started losing his hair. In the beginning I was in denial because my son loves being outdoors playing with our animals and I thought he had picked up bird mites (we have a lot of chickens he always wanted to be around). Right before his hair loss his head was full of dandruff that concerned me, but the doctor said it was nothing to worry about...a couple weeks later is when I noti his first bald spot the size of a dime. It started on his right side and continued to grow on that one side. Within three months all his hair fell out...this was eyebrows and all. The dermatologist gave us no hope saying that because his hair fell out so rapidly it meant that the disorder was too severe for his body which meant he would never grow hair again. She had him on topical and oral sterowhich I felt did not help at all so I stopped those treatments myself. I talked to a friend who said the same thing happened to her son when he was 4 and he was always with the chickens also, but he had a bird mite. She said she saw an allergist/dermatologist that gave her a topical cream that killed the mites. I thought this was my next step that hopefully this was it. My son got tested for environmental and food allergies and is allergic to everything you could imagine even mites (all mites). The allergist told me that my son needed to be on allergy shots twice a week and omit all foods he is allergic to so that we could build up his immune system. He said that the mites are not what I should be concerned about because my sons immune system is so shot that it could harm him in the future if we did not change our eating habits and what not. My son also has asthma which is an allergy that also needs to be treated through injection. Though we have been dieting for a month and I am noticing little pricks wanting to come out I cannot help but wonder if there is a home remedy that could speed up the hair growth process. My mom told me that she read online that apple cider vinegar is good for hair growth because it kills bacteria living on the scalp and balances ph levels of the hair. Has anybody with AU used this and if so did it work?!

So did you give him the apple cider? If so, let me know what happens.

Ive done about 2 weeks of every other day apple cider washes no such luck. Seemed to irritate the scalp and make it flaky. I'm not sure how long to do it for though? My daughter turns 6 tomorrow. recently diagnosed with AA. She had lice back in the end of September in kindergarten and lost her hair in a nickel size patch in November. Not sure if the lice shampoos caused it. I used the shampoos more than should have because I wanted to make sure we killed it and my other children didn't get lice. I also used a repellant spray and she lost her hair right where I would put her pony tail. Since treatment 2 months ago the patch has grown to about a half dollar size. I'm ordering Black Jamaican castor oil. I read some good reviews online. Will see.

Jessica let me know if the castor oil works...I too had no luck with the cider. The dermatologist told us not to ever expect hair growth again which annoys me because I will not accept that answer. The allergist told me that fish is really good for stimulating hair growth, but my son is allergic to sea food :/

Please don't accept that answer!  They truly have no clue whether or not hair will grow.  My daughter went totalis and grew back a full head of hair.  She is in the process of losing again, but there is always hope.  Working on finding her trigger....

Tryingtobestrong thank you.  It has been a year now and it seems like I am starting to lose hope.  It looked like my son had a couple little stubs that had me excited and feeling hopeful, but now he has nothing again.  I do not know what I am doing wrong.  We have dieted, I have taken him to light treatments for 6 months (and where I go is about 150 miles away round trip).  He was on Steroids which I took him off of because they were not helping.  I am going to try cow poop next I know it sounds gross but my grandmother says cow poop is good for hair growth.  I just need to go pick some up and see how it goes.  I am desperate and because of my sons situation I do not want to have anymore kids because of the fear of what will come with it.  If the kid I were to have did not go through what my son is going through I am afraid that my son would feel some sort of way and if I had a kid and they did go through the same thing I would feel like I just set it up for them.  I hope you all have a good Resurrection Sunday!
