Where acceptance is all there is!
I am sure you all have heard this comment by someone trying to get us Alopecians to see the bright side of not having hair. Well I dont know about the rest of you but this has been very expensive for me.
I was only diagnosed 4 months ago and lost my hair rather rapidly. I went from buying every scarf & hat i could find to hide the bald spots on the top of my head, only to find in a matter of weeks I needed a full wig.
I buy hats, scarfs, glues, combs, full wigs, halo wigs and my newest purchase that should be arriving anyday is a wig you can swim in. Maybe it is because this is all so new to me and I am trying to find what works, atleast that is what I tell my husband...LOL.I can say one thing for sure this has really been a learning experience for me & an expensive one!!!!!

P.S. Never cook, iron or bake in a synthetic wig!!!
I do not move my head much on my jobs, and I take my wigs off at home to save on wear, tear and heat. I avoid heat, and do brush or comb before wearing (Brush or comb with metal tongs. Plastic is not good for synthetics). I stay out of the sun and go to places with air conditioning. Long synthetics I always end up trimming shorter, because the heat from my neck or winter scarves ultimately fries the hair. I may try that CHI Silk Infusion Lisa Lynn discussed on this site to relax synthetic hair ends. I see it is at Walgreen's...a bit pricey. Oh...I also alternate wigs and sometimes wear hat for simple errands.
@Tallgirl..wow your synthetics last a year?? Mine is only 2 months old and it is starting to tangle ALOT underneath.
My synthetics I get are about $140 with the alopecia discount and sometimes last a year when I treat them nicely.
S alopecia that is a lot of money for a hair piece. The most I have ever paid was $600 and that wig lasted about 10 months.
I have bought about 5 real hair wigs at 5,000 each :( my question is how we only get a 250 dollar rebate and how a wig could possibly cost 5000!!
It was the same for me - during my first year after losing my hair (2008), I bought 6 different, not-inexpensive, wigs, and countless scarves, hats and coverups.
These days, being completely hairless is VERY inexpensive for me. I've given away all the wigs, and wear one of my Turkish or other scarves (tied as shown in my YouTube video) when I'm chilly, or a sunhat when I'm out in the sun. Most of the time, I'm bald. I thought I'd never go out bald, but once I started with "baby steps" to the mailbox and then supermarket...it just became who I am. It took me about a year. This is me now, and I don't spend anything and am cool and comfortable all the time. I do have a large earring collection now, though! Good luck.
Yip i also hate when people say this to me. I lost my hair 1st time round within 3wks and then after 2yrs got it all bak and was just finally enjoying havin my hair when its again coming out! I wore a wig for 2yrs but actually hated it so this time round i did get a wig but wont wear it again and wont go without scarfs either as i'll never ever go out bald., x
@AZMon..Hi I bought the swim wig from hatswithhair.com, they actually make them to fit your head. I will let you know how it works as I love to go boating and wakeboarding.
