Will it stop before it all falls out?

I started losing my hair when I was 16. I was devastated over a small round patch missing from the side of my head. I am now 25 and currently have one patch that has started to regrow, another that is perfectly smooth right next to it, and my eyelashes on one side have fallen out. (I may have like five or so left in the very corner) I don't understand it. I used to be able to go months without any patches appearing, but now i'm lucky if a new one hasn't begun before the previous one even starts growing back. I'm so worried that it's all going to come out. How do I explain that to my two little ones? Has anyone else started out like this and then lost everything?

Yes. Well, let's see...taking off one's wig at stoplights is good leverage for breaking up annoying, DISTRACTING BACK SEAT FIGHTS when they are in junior high. Some male children will get in fights to defend Mom's honor...some kids will learn to be sensitive to physical challenges in others. By the time they reach their 20s, they accept Mom's nice new wig and pose in pictures with smiles next to Mom. I am still waiting to hear if some kids of alopecians become dermatologists of geneticists to help find a cause and cure. A lot depends on how well the dad models love and acceptance, because kids will copy attitudes.

Hard as it is to hear, some of us DO lose it all. Start talking to yourself in the mirror to accept yourself FIRST, then move on to adult family, best friends. By that time, you may find the answers for talking to your children. Visit other parents on this site, and follow the conversations to see what they say and do. By the way, the kids hated my stoplight trick, but at least it shut them up and we are all alive today!

I got my hair cut yesterday...even shorter...its easier to deal (at least makes it SEEM like I am loosing less hair, than when it was almost 2 feet longer back in August). My youngest son, turning 20 in a week, looked at me, shook his head in disapproval, and walked away from me. That hurt! "I don't have a choice in loosing my hair" I told him. He doesn't understand this is my way of coping the best I can, and loosing at least some of my hair on my own terms. :( Maybe he just isn't coping with it well. I dont know.

Have you tried showing this site to him? maybe he just doesn't fully understand what YOU are going through. I have a 2 and a 1/2 year old son who is extremely intelligent for his age. He has the vacabulary and thinking skills of most 4-5 year olds. I asked him last night if he thought mommy should cut her hair. He said it would be awesome if I has the same hair cut as he did. I'm lucky he is so young because this will be all he knows. LIke I said before, just try showing him this site. Show him the different stages of Alopecia and hopefully he will gain a better understanding for you.

Thanks Rachell. I don't know if he would even look at the site. My 21 year old wont :( I think it is just hard for them. I was gone for a few days, and my hubby and 21 year old decided to finally put in the new plumbing fixtures in our bathroom sinks..they said my sink was disgusting...because of all the hair in there...yeah..I bet it really was. They used to complain cause my hair was mid-ways down my back and it fell out all over the place...now when it falls out, there won't be as much of it..they should be happy. If not, oh well. ;)
