Hi, this is my first time on this website. My son was diagnosed with AA when he was 3, he is now 5. It started like everyone else, patchy baldness that has progressivly spread all over his head. He seems to be on kind of a cycle, he begins losing his hair in the late fall each year and it all grows back each summer, does anyone else have this and is this normal with AA? He has very blonde hair, but he has patches in different areas of head that grow in dark brown and very course. He doesn't have hair loss anywhere else, just his scalp. He really hasn't been bothered by it until recently and he has a really hard time when people look at him and he says he feels embarrased. His classmates are used to seeing him and I keep his hair shaved down very close to his head. My question is I don't know how to talk to him about how to handle the stares and when other kids make comments about him being bald. I know that I have been going through this for a couple years, but it isn't getting any easier for me, it breaks my heart and everytime his hair grows back I hope it stays and then the thinning begins again. It is just really frustrating...Any suggestions??

I once met a man with Alopecia Universalis (whole body) who grew hair after travelling in a sunny country all summer, and I have been told that ANY sun on the body can help grow hair...so maybe that's why the summer growth. And my bruneete original hair grew back white and wispy...such is this condition. Usually it IS just the hair on the head. Google all the info on Alopecia Areata (patches, areas) and Alopecia Totalis (whole top of head). My parents had to go through this with me. Read what other parents have said on this site. You are not alone. Neither is your son. Will you be going to the fun conference in Houston in June? It is great for KIDS.
