Hi karina, i have acrylic wigs which last about 4mths. they are ok but not good in the heat as get very hot. I have heard the natural hair wigs are better but they are very expensive here in Scotland. I have tried www.wigs.com which is an American site. My wigs are made by Rene de paris. Hope that helps and you are well. x

Hi Karina,

I just received your question about wigs. I am by far not an expert of the topic but I can try to help you.

I like the Raquel Welch Wigs. Their comfortable and not to expensive. Here is one of many links that carry her wigs.

Hi Karina
Happy Easter...it means so much to us believers! the Lord helps me with any journey i face in this life and i know its important to you! i promised i would tell you how my wig hunt went and it went well. i bought a Follea wig and its great. its light and comfortable just like they say. it needs some restyling and thinning which i will work on this week with my stylist. it was definitely worth the 10 hour drive! i hope and pray each day for you that God would lift the depression you feel. i use to counsel and one thing i thought of praying for you is that losing ones hair may have kicked in a chemical depression (not your fault..just chemical) and you may want to talk to your dr about that. some people dont believe in taking anti depressants and try to tough it out but if your brain chemicals are off all the willpower in the world will not help. sometimes when a big thing like losing your hair happens it throws off your brain chemicals and anti depressants can help dramatically. im not a medical professional but i have several friends with AGA that have been helped with medication. it makes it easier to handle the things you need to do like getting your wig and/or getting it styled. just a suggestion. i will keep praying the Lord will touch and heal your heart and give you the strength to get through this. again Happy Easter..its a time of great hope and promise! hugs...Joy

Hi Karina,
For now, I would try to get a wig or make your wig as comfortable (and to your liking)as possible. It is a huge adjustment getting used to a wig and I never really got comfortable with mine either. I am trying a topper next week which is tied to my head and I am hoping it will blend with the hair that I do have.

In the meantime, you need to surround yourself with supportive people. If your parents don't understand you, find other women in your area with alopecia so you can share stories. I am sure that your friends will be supportive as well.

As I am not as familiar with androgenetic alopecia, I cannot suggest treatment other than to get on a health promoting diet that is rich in oats, rice and lots of veggies (especially the green ones) to increase your intake of silica and other important vitamins and minerals.

If you don't exercise, it is a good idea to start a regime that will help to alleveiate the depression. I suggest walking and yoga to start with. I find the community at my yoga studio very supportive and understanding.

There are a number of good books out there that can provide you with lots of support as well. The first thing, though, is to accept and love yourself right now. And believe me that the one thing that is hard for most of us to do. One book I can recommend is Louise Hay's Heal Your Body and also her other book Heal Your Life.

My newsletter that comes out next week has a number of suggestions to promote hair growth - you are welcome to sign up by going to my blog.

I am not sure if any of this helps but these are baby steps to get you started. I believe that alopecia has come into each of our lives for a reason. Allow it to teach you about yourself - your fears and insecurites and through that you will find your strengths.

Please stay connected and let me know what you are doing to adjust and make change. I would be happy to walk with you through this tough time in your life.

Hi Karina!

I am doing something sort of strange while I'm waiting for my Freedom Wig to come in. I had a human hair topper that I got last year, but when I shaved my head in Feb., I thinned out and trimmed my Amore Samantha (Moccachino color)wig and clipped my topper to the top of the wig. It sounds weird but it is passable until I get my Freedom wig (in about 8 weeks). I also have Amore Tatum wig in Mocchachino, which is, in my opinion, the best synthetic wig I've tried. But after all the wigs I've tried on, human hair is always the most realistic looking. All of the Amore mono tops are very comfy - no itching, no headaches. Hope that helps!!!!!

Hi Karina,
So tell me what is going on.... how long have you had alopecia and is it areata, totalis, universalis? Also, what is FBT? What is your life like - do you work, have children, married? And when you say nobody understands you, can you be more specific?

Have you had your new wig styled? My wigs looked hideous when I first got them, but I got them "dewigged" so they looked somewhat more natural.
It sounds as though alopecia is fairly new to you so there are lots of things that we can go through. It is a huge adjustment at first, so it is good to talk to people and get some perspective. I would also look into an alopecia support group in your area.
I also understand your depression and this is probably where you need to start so if you can provide me with some details I am sure that there are some things that you can do right away to start turning things around for yourself. Really, don't despair, Karina, all of us here on this site have been through what you are going through to some degree and are finding ways to cope and even to heal, so know tht it is going to get better from here on in.

No, there are many different ways wigs are made.
Do you want to get a custom wig made just for you?

Is it itchy? In the past I've had some itchy wigs but I just tolerate them.

What is going on with the front? Can you cut bangs into it so the hairline doesn't show? The front and the hairline are the hardest parts and can look very fake if not done right.
Yes, I wear wigs in the summer, too!

glad you like the song...i listen to it alot. it really is true...that we are all precious no matter what. sorry to hear about what happened to your hair. i know it can be very difficult emotionally. i would think people would not laugh if you wore a wig though...most people cant tell or are you talking about people that you know? well..you have a friend in me. i know what you are going through. im a little nervous about wearing a wig but im trying to think of it as a fashion piece like earrings or make up. i understand about panic attacks and depression. many of my family have it. you come on my page anytime you want and listen to the song!! blessings to you!

Hi Karina
im sorry you are sad!! i know the feeling. i have been wearing a human hair topper the last couple years but my hair is too thin now and i need to get a full wig. i have an appointment for next Saturday to look at some human hair wigs. there's alot of pretty wigs out there...both synthetic and human hair. what happened to your hair? my hair loss runs in the family and also may be from one of my medications. im glad you liked my song on my page!

Some wigs are more comfortable than others, but with all of them, a wig cap underneath is essential. This will prevent the majority of the itching and slipping. While I have a human hair wig, I wear mainly my synthetics. They're easier to care for and I fool everyone into thinking it's real hair! As far as comfort - you have to find the right balance of snug but not too tight. Definitely cannot be too loose or it will slip around and you'll end up adjusting it all the time.
Three months ago, I never thought I would say I am used to wearing wigs, but I actually am almost there!
Good luck!
