Hi Nicole, thank you for the request. We all have been right where you are, now. You've com to the right place, there is always someone here. This site changed my prreception on life with alopecia. You'll soon see how many wonderful, strong, dependable people are on this site. Here anytime. Take care - your son is so cute.
Hi Nicole. I'm sorry to hear about your diagnosis. I think you'll hear from everyone here that the unpredictability is very tough. Hang in there. I think when I began I was hoping for a quick fix or someone to tell me what would happen. But....it's a journey and you have just hold on for the ride!
A sudden physical or emotional stress may cause one-half to three-quarters of the hair throughout your scalp to shed (called Telogen effluvium). You will notice hair coming out in handfuls while you shampoo, comb, or run your hands through your hair. You may not notice this for weeks to months after the episode of stress. The hair shedding will decrease over 6 - 8 months.
Cause of this type of hair loss are:
•High fever or severe infection
•Childbirth
•Major surgery, major illness, sudden blood loss
•Severe emotional stress
•Crash diets, especially those that do not contain enough protein
•A number of medications, including retinoids, birth control pills, beta-blockers, certain antidepressants, NSAIDs (including iburpofen) and calcium channel blockers
Some women ages 30 - 60 may notice a thinning of the hair that affects the entire scalp. The hair loss may be heavier at first, and then gradually slow or stop. There is no known cause for this type of hair loss.
I've been around here almost since the beginning!
I know it's hard to wonder what's going to happen next with your hair. Alopecia is unpredictable, so you could find your hair growing back never to fall out again, or it could continue to fall. Many of us have been through it all -- I lost all the hair on my body -- but I'm fine with it and even wrote a book about it to help other women.
Remember that what really counts is what's in your heart -- not what's on your head!
Hugs, LeslieAnn

And, of course, alopecia.
