My Alopecia Story:

my alopecia started when I was still female identified at the age of 16.At the time, my hair was long and part of my identity, or at least my security. It started out with my middle part splitting and gradually widening and smooth bald patches all over my head. it was devastating at a time in my life when societal expectations of "girls" is focused on hair and appearance. the alopecia would come and go, in between various treatments like creams, tars, ointments, prednisone "pulses", and the worst; 20-50 corticosteroid scalp injections without any anesthetic or pre-numbing. I started wearing a bandanna all the time to conceal the hairless. people would suggest maybe getting a wig but that just didn't quite fit with me. it's fine for others, but just not me. I started going to the Long Island (NY) Alopecia support group but still felt like I didn't quite fit in. it's not that I didn't like wearing the bandanna, I just didn't like feeling that I wasn't wearing it out of choice, rather to hide the hair loss, to hide me. it greatly affected my self-esteem and I couldn't find ANYONE who could relate to what I was going through. perhaps it did help a bit more when I came out as lesbian, because my freshly shaven head fit right in with all the other Ani Difranco lovin' grrrls and I "looked the part." (this was years before I wrestled with my gender identity. *please note gender identity DOES NOT EQUAL sexual orientation.
