Sometimes it is worse for the parents to begin with because we have a better understanding of what the far reaching consequences will be than the children do. If she has close friends then there is a good chance that she will cope well. Also if she is involved in sport or in interest groups and she continues to participate as normal this helps.
It is heartbreaking though to see them go through this.
My son Jon was asking the question just recently "Why me?" That is a very hard one to answer sometimes.
