- I first had alopecia areata at age 10. It was difficult for several years and then by college it had mostly stabilized. Then at age 43, several days after a traumatic loss, my hair began falling out noticeably. After two months or so, I'd lost all the hair on my head. After three months, I began losing my eyelashes and eyebrows.
