Anthony's story update:
We went through all the blood testing for thyroid and allergies and anything else that we could think of. End result: he's perfectly healthy, but bald. We saw a pediatric dermatologist at the Children's Hospital and the only treatment we considered was SADBE (a chemical applied to the scalp that would create an allergy in hopes that it would divert the immune system from the hair follicles). We did the test spot and he had no reaction whatsoever. In a follow up…

Welcome to the International Alopecia Day Group! I'm happy you're doing something in Phoenix! I look forward to seeing the photos!
Hi Heather - Someone just joined the International Alopecia Day Group and sent me a message saying she'd like to do something in Phoenix this year, but doesn't know how to start. Her name is Rachel Anne.
I just created a Discussion on the IAD Group for Phoenix. You can join the Group if you haven't. Maybe you two can get together on August 4th?
How are you and Anthony today?

Welcome to AW and HAPPY BIRTHDAY! I hope it is a wonderful day.
Sorry your little boy has alopecia - I'm sure that is tough for you! My mother always says to me " I feel so helpless" not an easy place to be....
I just read your blog - I've had AA on and off for about 20 years now and have seen numerous specialist. And although I do use a steroid topical - none of the specialist I saw recommend an oral steroid. Their reason was - it is a temporary fix therefore the side effect risk is not worth it. I did also participate in a alopecia study and through that experience I talked to other patients many of whom tried oral steroids... and their experience echoed what I was told. Many had success while on them and once they stopped their hair fell out and in some cases ended up with more hair loss than before... I hope that helps!!
Heather
