I was diagnosed with Alopecia Areata when I was an undergrad. I actually noticed my first spot in high school. It was very small and grew back, so I didn't think of it again. A few years after the diagnosis it started getting worse. My hair stylist was really great at helping me style it so it wasn't noticeable (if the wind didn't blow just right). -And then I experienced 2 traumatic events. Within 6 mos, I had lost so much hair I had to start wearing wigs (at age 29). Eventually watching it go got so stressful, I shaved my head. Within another 2 years, it was all gone. So, I've been wearing wigs for about 15 yrs. I guess.
I've always worn bandannas at the gym, but it took a long time to get comfortable with that. It is only very recently that I have become comfortable baring my head in front of anyone- including myself (I wear a wig even if I am home alone).
Recently, I started losing my eyebrows, which panicked me. So a month ago, I had them micro-pigmented (tattooed). Now that I am no longer anxiously watching for more hair loss every morning, I am much more relaxed, so it was worth it.
