About Me:
I was 18 when I first noticed bald patches on my head. I went to many different professionals, but it was only after going to the Mayo Clinis in Rochester, MN, that I first heard the term Alopecia. I also learned that there was no widely successful treatment or cure available. The most important thing I learned was seeing all of the truly sick and terminally ill patients at that clinic, I realized that my malady wasn't that serious. There is much worse things that I could "suffer" with. By that time, the hair had fallen out to the point that it couldn't be hidden any longer. That's when I started wearing a wig. It was somewhat of a disguise, but it never felt or looked very natural to me. Plus it was hot in the summer and there was always a possibility of it blowing off (to this day I don't like being out in the wind). I met a girl, who had researched what I had and probably knew more about it than I did at the time. I thought I was hiding it from her, but she knew and loved me anyway. We got married and had a child, and I continued to wear the wig, but at home I would go without. I was afraid that someone would see me. When someone came to the door I would hurry and put it on. That's no way to live. One night, I just decided to shave the hair I had left and go natural. It was a very freeing experience, but I got a lot of looks, because it was not yet fashionable back in 1980. My hair has come and gone, but stopped growing back since 1990. I still wish for hair, but I'm okay with the way I look. This website would have been a great source of support back when I first experienced my hair loss. Thanks for being here for those who need the support and understanding. It really helps to know that you're not alone!
