About Me:
I was recently dx with female pattern hairloss but that is not why I am joining this site. My daughter has started to loose her hair. Her hair loss looks like bald spots and her doctor said it was probably alopecia areata. I would like to e-mail with young women who were dx with AA as children to figure out how I can best support my child.
Do you have alopecia?
Female pattern baldness
Are you age 18 or older?
Yes - I am 18 or older

Here's my story

Almost six months ago I decided to take some meds to have perfectly clear skin for my upcoming wedding. The meds they gave me were very strong and caused my hair to shed. At first the docs said it would stop falling out in three months and grow back within 6 months. It didn't stop falling out. My hair just got thinner and thinner. They did a biopsy and told me the hair loss due to the meds "unmasked" a genetic predisposition for female pattern hair loss. I was devastated. I had to start… Continue

Hi Angelica, I haven't seen anything recent from you here. I hope that you and your daughter are doing ok. I know what you mean about being heartbroken and would give anything if it could be you, not her. I felt the same way (please read my blogs). It's been 3 years since my daughter started losing her hair. She is AU. I wanted you to know that she does better with it than I do. Kids are incredibly resillient...she is happy-go-lucky and goes about her life just as if she doesnt have this. She does wear a human hair, lace wig that is permanently attached, so I think that helps her feel just like everyone else. As her mom, I try to be supportive and put things in perspective when she has a bad day. If it gets to the point of being really noticable to other people, please tell her teachers/classmates/friends about it. Most kids are very supportive when they know what the problem is. My daughter went through a period when she didn't want to talk about it...it was the worst time for us both during the past 3 years. As soon as she came out about it, life was great again (read my blogs).
Be strong and remember, life is about more than hair!!!

Thats how it started with my daughter, one spot then 2 and now about 6% of her hair is gone completley. Its VERY sad and I HATE it. er hair was LONG, down to her bum, BEAUTIFUL, thick, blonde looked like highlights, just beautiful. Now its almost all gone, and short to her shoulders because when we had it long it was too thin looking. In the pic here was about 8 months ago and now her hair is even thinner. *sigh*
