About Me:
I am 44 and I have a 9 year old son that was born with Alopecia however we have been told that it may be contributed to genetics (simular to Ectodermal Dysplasia) however he only has the side of effect of an absence of head hair. We have seen several specilaist and without my husband and I being tested we are not sure if it is genetics, the only other alternative is to have a biopsy done on our sons scalp, which we have been told may not help to be 100% sure as to whether or not it is Alopecia so we choose not to do this, as we do not want to leave him with a scar. I have spent hours upon hours of research only to find out how rare it is for a child to be born with Alopecia. My son is very involved in sports, school activites and plays the piano. He is very confident however I worry about how the alopecia will effect him in his teen years. I am looking for feedback from others that have children born with Alopecia or a genetic issue that has casued their child to never grow hair. (My son does have eyelashes, eyebrows and normal body hair for a 9 yr old).

LOOKING FOR OTHERS WITH A CHILD BORN WITH ALOPECIA

Posted on April 13, 2009 at 7:30pm 0 Comments

I am the mother of a beatiful, outgoing and amazing nine year boy who was born with alopecia. I have spent hours upon hours and traveled the country seeing specialist to learn how unique his situaiton truly is (only to become more frustrated). I have been told that it may be genetic, he was born bald and his hair only grows to that of the newborn stage (Anagen Stage). His hair is extremly fine and very blond, almost white, the very little that he has that is. It never grows more then the length… Continue

I had my biopsy in elementry school. What they were able to find out was that I had absolutly no hair folicals. Genetic testing would be just a simple blood draw. How does your son feel about persuing this? Any thing else I can do to help just let me know.
I wish you the best. God Bless.

Hi Cindy, my brother and I were both born with Alopecia. I am now 35 and he is 36. I must be honest, I think it was a lot easier for my brother because he was a boy. He never really covered it up or had a hard time dealing with it. However I feel it was a lot more difficult for me being a girl. I did cover it up for years with a wig until this past Independence Day. Now I only wear hats but trying to be stylish.

Hi Cindy,

I have met a lady here in Australia whose son was born bald too. I spoke to her about it and she told me it is genetics. Her and her husband have both been tested with the docs sending the work overseas as well. Her other children all have hair however the gene pool in her son has come up with alopecia. She said that both her and her husband carry this special gene.
