About Me:
I've always been very healthy and active. About three months I began to lose my beard on my chin and my dermatologist diagnosed it as stress induced Alopecia, and said it would most likely regrow in a year. I didn't worry about it too much because I figured why worry about something I shave off anyway. But last Friday I went to get a haircut, told the barber to buzz me, and was instantly shocked to see several small bald spots on one side of the back of my head and one very large, very noticable one on the other side. I called my doctor and he said the only treatment that MAY work are the injections. I am loath to pump anything into my body but at the same time if there is anything I can do to slow or reverse this process I should consider it. I am a very fit 50 year old and this is my first experience with Alopecia. Any advice from you folks would be much appreciated. I am so impressed with the strength and courage you people display, your pride in yourselves, and your resilience. I'm so impressed that I now understand that if the worst should happen, and I lose all of my hair, I can easily live with it. Thanks.

My very strange case

Posted on January 18, 2011 at 7:30am 2 Comments

Hello Folks: I came down with an acute case of Alopecia about two years ago and it was clearly linked to extreme stress. First I lost my beard on my chin and then I progressed to HUGE bald patches on the back and sides of my head. About a year ago my hair began to return as I noticed that I was starting to lose my body hair. Now I have a full head of curly and bushy hair while I think I'm still in the process of losing my body hair! How weird! I was under the impression that once this… Continue

Come listen to a story about a man named Jed.

Come and listen to a story about a man named Jed.

Poor mountaineer owned the hair upon his head.

But then one day he was shootin' at some food,

and out fell his hair right down to the root.

Bald, that is. Chrome domed. Cueball style.

Well the first thing you know ole Jed is combing air.

Kinfolk said, "Jed you been hitting Nair?"

Said, "Dermatology is the place you outa be."

So they loaded up the truck and they moved to… Continue

A Poem: Fuzzy Wuzzy was a Bear.

Posted on August 6, 2009 at 10:48am 12 Comments

Fuzzy Wuzzy was a bear, and Fuzzy Wuzzy liked his hair.

But then one day he tripped and fell, into a pool of woman's Nair.

Now Fuzzy Wuzzy -- once so fair, was Fuzzy Wuzzy who had no hair.

So Fuzzy Wuzzy went on a tear, or sat around in his underwear.

Either way he didn't dare, go out in public without his hair.

So Fuzzy Wuzzy was a bear and Fuzzy Wuzzy had no hair.

And try as might he could not care, about anything other than his hair.

So everyday… Continue

A Famous Alopecian??

Posted on July 30, 2009 at 8:31am 3 Comments

Hey all: It occured to me that a famous bear, second only to Smokey T. Bear, may have been an Alopecian. His name was Fuzzy Wuzzy. Does anyone know what he's doing these days?

Hi John!! You will get through this. I do know there is a doctor at I believe Boston Medical Center who specializes in hair loss. You may want to check it out. I may be able to get the name for you if your interested. There is also a new New England non-profit called New England Alopeicians United, Inc. They have their own message board as well. The founders have some events they are planning. You may want to check it out and connect others in the area. Cindy

Hi John, Welcome to AW..I am in Mass too and have a 7 yr old daughter with this condition. I read your profile and I am sorry to hear this is happening to you. Unfortunately, you can be perfectly healthy and have alopecia. Sam is the heathist child I know and this happened to her. Samantha is currently being treated by a doctor at Children's Hospital and is doing a treatment that is working. What you see is her regrowth. It is called squaric acid and it is an irritant. It is not a treatment that alot of doctors are trained in or knowledgeable about. You can google SADBE to read about it. Don't be afraid to go to another doctor for a second opinion regarding treatment options. I have taken my daughter to multiple doctors until I found one willing to try to help her. But, cortizone shots are a common treatment among adults and I believe the doctor numbs the scalp so you don't feel it..Good luck. Cindy..BTW, Where is Fairhaven?
