About Me:
I am a 33 year old attorney in Houston, Texas. I lost all of the hair on my head between December 2006 and February 2007. After a few months, I continued to lose all of my body hair, including my eyebrows, eyelashes etc. But over the course of the past year, I have learned so much about myself--namely, that who I am is not based on my hair or lack thereof--and about my friends and family.

turning a corner...

Posted on August 29, 2008 at 4:13pm 1 Comment

although I have had a couple of hard days this past month in dealing with my alopecia, overall, I really feel like I have turned a corner and feel much more comfortable in my own skin and confident. I'm not really sure what specifically has changed... maybe my two weeks in the mountains is sinking into my entire being, maybe all the bikram yoga I am doing... not realyl sure but it is a great comfort to have found a bit of peace with respect to all of this. I still have not told most of my… Continue

Back from Big Sky Country

Posted on July 27, 2008 at 10:27pm 2 Comments

Just returned from a two week National Outdoor Leadership School course in the Wind River Wilderness Range in Wyoming. What an amazing trip... for so many reasons, not te least of which was going wig free for two weeks in front of 14 strangers. It was so liberating. When we got back in town I even went out with my group without my wig on an flew home without my wig on. Huge risks for me but with amazing pay off... feel so much more confident.

Come Monday... it'll be alright

So I am totally over the Sunday night blues. I went for a good run this morning and then had a very productive day at work. My brother and I are going to see The Cure tonight, so that should be fun. I'm struggling though with not being in a relationship. I waste so much energy thinking about it. energy that could be used to do a million other things. but I'm stuck focused on it. almost all of my friends are married and many have a kid or two. Part of me thinks I haven't found the right guy to… Continue

I hate Sunday nights

Posted on June 8, 2008 at 9:23pm 1 Comment

I love my life...I really do--even with AU but I hate sunday evenings. they just seem like the time for families but my mom and stepdad live in Florida and my brother typically has his own things going on on Sunday evenings. Monday through Satruday I'm almost always busy with friends, social events, volunteering--sometimes I'm even double or triple booked but Sundays just seem like dead air. like they are interminable. I think I'm going to shut this one down early and go to bed.

I like your hiking photos. Thats something I really want to do, hike part of the Appalatian trail through the Smoky Mountains. (now if I could just spell it) I think you are cool looking without hair. People with courage and who carry themselves well are much admired.

Hi Maidie-
Thanks for your comment. We moved this past weekend and finally got settled in. I love the Heights area. I went to this restaurant the other day in the area called Vietnam...have you been there...it was great. Let me know when you have time and lets get together for coffee or something! Hope you have been doing well!

Hi Maidie,

I live in Houston as well and I would like to at some point meet other people in our area who have Alopecia. I have recently been diagnosed with the condition. It has been six months now. It started with just the hair on top of my head and within the last two months spread to my eyelashes and eyebrows.

Hi Maidie, thanks for the information on the permanent makeup. I really considering going ahead and doing it. I have read Bald as a Bean and I loved it. Reading the book gave me the courage to join this site and start talking to people that are dealing/accepting au. I love to read and plan on reading the other books you suggested. Thanks again for ALL the information you have giving me!

Thanks for all the info Maidie! I appreciate it. All my hair just feel out in January and I have bought one wig since then. I like it, but sometime I worry it is going to fall off and I think I want to go ahead an get another one. I used to be active but since my au I have found myself not wanting to do anything active for fear that my wig or cap I am wearing might fall off. I will have to check out the place in Houston where you got your wig.
I have lost all my eyebrows and eyelashes. Have you done the permanent make up and if so, would you recommend it? Thanks again for the information. Your positive outlook has given me hope for my future and for finding acceptance with my au.

Hi Maidie. My name is Sarah and I came across your profile and noticed your were from Houston. I just moved to Houston in February. I also have AU (started losing my hair in December of 2006 and became AU in January of 2008). It is great to find a site like this and get in contact with other people in the same situation! It was great to see in your profile that you have been able to learn so much about yourself while dealing with AU. I am starting to go through the acceptance part of this struggle and it is nice to see that it can happen. Do you have any suggestions on where to purchase wigs in Houston?

Yes, I have been married since 2001. I lost all my hair after I had our son almost 2 years ago. I get my wigs online and also at Andre's wigs. Do you know where that is? It is over near West U. The people there are really nice and helpful. So have you met anyone else in Houston that has AA/AU?
