I know there are much worse things that can be passed on to children, but a part of me is rather scared to have kids because I hate knowing I may pass on my AA. Anyone else have these fears?

Dear Holly,

Many thanks for your time for such detail response. Really appreciated.

I had the same fear 16 yrs ago when i was getting ready to welcome my son into the world..at that time i didnt know if i would pass it on or not.  I was lucky enough to have a doctor who also has alopecia, he was very reassuring that the chances of passing it on was slim....3% or less.   my son has never had a sign of alopecia as a matter of fact, he is very much the oppisite, lots and lots of hair!

I have had 5 children and none of them have alopecia. I have one daughter who has thinning hair that is mostly due to thyroid issues. I lost my hair about 6 years ago. I would consult with a specialist and voice your concerns. Also look at your family history. It's always a concern with any disorder heart disease, thyroid issues, high blood pressure, etc. Granted, I did not have alopecia till I was in my 40's, but there are just too many what if's. I would have a consult to have your questions answered.

I've had AA for pretty much my entire life.  41/44 years.  I also have had Diabetes for 31/44 years.  There were thoughts in the back of my mind...but there is no guarantee either way.  I have two children (13 and 6) both with no signs of either of the things I have.  They do have Asthma, in varying degrees, but that is not something I ever had but my wife does.

Neither of my parents, or anyone else in my family has Alopecia.  I have seen no research showing any genetic component that can be passed on.

Like you said there are much worse things that can be passed on to children. Besides for that, I have 2 children and they make me happier than I have ever been. I don't think you should be scared, children are the biggest blessing and it's worth that tiny tiny risk.

I got AU when I was 2, my maternal grandmother got it at age 5. I had my daughter when I was 29.She was blessed with enough hair for two people. I always have the fear that one day she will wake up and her eyebrow will be gone, and she will be completely bald within 2 weeks, just like me..but then I think, if she does develop Alopecia, who else would be able to help hwr through this, than a mom who has it too and has gone through it. In my opinion, you cant live life with the fears of all the "what if's"..if you want children, have them. Good luck :-)
Well said! There are too any what ifs in our life! Bit that is life! It's not all planned out for us!
I got my AA after I had my sons! They are both in their 20s now and have no signs of my hair loss. Children are such a blessing! Don't let hair loss or AA stop you from that wonderful experience of creating life!!
