Are there any other women out there who have alopecia and had their hair grow back during pregnancy? I'm asking because I was completely bald before I was pregnant, grew enough hair to almost cosmetically go without a wig during pregnancy, and then lost it all again after my son was born. I know doctors say alopecia is an auto immune disorder, but my experience leads me to think it may be hormonal. I'd appreciate any input on the subject.

I have heard of this happening before
Actually, think about it -- pregnancy in and of itself is a natural immunosuppressant -- Your own immune system is suppressed or tamped down to keep the baby growing inside you alive; otherwise your body would reject the baby and kill it. It would stand to reason that since your immune system is inhibited in this way it would also not be attacking your hair like it normally would and thus allow for some sort of hair growth.

I'm trying to get pregnant myself, and years of being the medical guinea pig has made me okay with testing this hypothesis during my own pregnancy. When the blessed event happens, I'll be sure to let you all know what I find out.
Thanks for introducting me to a new perspective, I hadn't thought of pregnancy as a natural immunosuppressant. I wonder what causes that immunosuppression though. I'm still stuck on this dream that a doctor could give me some hormones to mimic pregnancy, my hair would grow back, and it'd be happily ever after. I doubt it could be that easy. I especially wouldn't want to go through morning sickness the rest of my life just to grow my hair back. I'd love to hear if you experience regrowth during pregnancy too.
Well I'm experiencing regrowth right now; leave it to AA to rear its ugly head and let it be just my buzzard luck to have the reverse happen when and if the happy event occurs. I'll definitely keep you posted.
I developed AU when I was pregnant with my last child 9 years ago and I'm convinced it is hormonal. I have finally found a doctor who is willing to work with me to explore the possibilities. I'm seeing her tomorrow, wish me luck!
I'm pregnant at the moment and I do experience some regrowth. I will definitely let you know if all my hair falls out again. How old was your baby when your hair fell out after your pregnancy?
Dear Zoe it is about 2 years since your pregnancy. How about your hair now?

Thank you....
When I was pregnant I had no hair loss during that time and had a lot of regrowth. If anything I actually thought my hair was too thick and could use some thinning, ha. 3 months after giving birth it started to fall out and I thought it might just be normal pregnancy alopecia, now at 7 months post partum I have about 80% hair loss and it's still falling out. I've had alopecia areata since I've been 13, but smallish patches that you'd never see. In my twenties when I was on the pill (or getting off it, now I can't remember) the patches got a bit bigger but I was still able to hide them and got regrowth with injections. I'm now looking into a wig and trying Clobetasol-a topical corticosteriod. I'm convinced for me it's hormonal, I'm just hoping once these hormones even out it will stop falling and grow back again. If I could remember if going on the pill or going off the pill was a trigger I'd consider asking my doctor about going back on but I'm afraid it will just get my system even more screwy.
Has anyone else seen a difference when taking birth control?
Yes.....I have had 2 pregnancys and hair grew back almost completely both times but within 3 to 5 months it all came out again :(......Have been through many theorys over the years with doctors demanding they give me something to mimick pregnancy. I had all my hormones tested and they were almost perfect they thought it would be worthless pumping me full of hormones and the answer is to reboot the immune system but how ?? impossible
I have had Alopecia Universalus for about 19 years. I am 8 weeks pregnant and I feel that my immune system has shut down. Week after week I get sick with something new. I used to RARELY get sick before....

Has anyone else had this experience while being pregnant of getting sick more. I see in some of the posts that pregnancy is a natural immunosuppressant...do I just need to start being EXTRA careful about picking up illnesses now???
My hair grew back while I was pregnant. I had lost about 70% of my hair last year which I think was initially due to stress but then it's like a vicious circle 'cos you then get stressed about the hair loss. My baby is now three months old and the alopecia has returned, had my hopes up that my hair was sticking around but unfortunately that doesn't seem to be the case.
