I've got Alopecia areata barbae (effects the beard only) started about a year ago. It hasn't gotten any better, I've been treating it with a steroid topical cream "Cloderm" for a couple of weeks now, with no new growth. Does anyone else only suffer from the alopecia of the face/beard? if so, how long have you had it, has it grown back, what treatments do you use etc...

Thanks in adance :)

I understand your problem and I'm sure yours is worse than mine since I was blonde and you have black
hair. It was distracting when in the middle of a conversation someone would ask if I missed
a spot shaving. Susan is right about the steriod cream and since your not getting any new growth why
take the health risk. My beard was off/on for about 35 years I gave away more shavers than I can
remember, because it would all fall out then grow back after I had given my shaver away. I used
prednizone for a couple months and had good beard growth but when I got taken off it the beard just
fell out again.
Thanks for understanding Galvin, since having alopecia barbae, did it ever spread to anywhere else on your body?
Hopefully the alopecia just stays in you beard or goes away completly.
I wouldnt use the steroids.
I've stopped w/ the steroid cream it was giving me acne. I've read that just applying iodine has worked for some. I'm thinking about trying it out.
You could give it a try. How much facial hair are you missing?
about 40%
JP,

My Alopecia started as a small patch on my beard in late 2004. I had a very thick and dark beard so the bald patches were very noticeable. I've since lost all my beard and it spread to my eyebrows, eyelashes, and now my head and body. My eyelashes have come back and gone again. My father had the same thing when he was my age, but it was limited to a small patch on his beard and it went away. However, it's recently came back for him as a round spot on the back of his head.

I've been all over the internet trying to lean as much as I can because doctors don't seem to know anything useful in getting my hair to come back. I've tried Rogain but that was a waste of money for me.

I read that there might be an environmental trigger to AA for some people. So over the past year I've been cutting out things from my diet, trying different shampoos and soaps and I think I'm finally on to something.

I stopped using my deodorant to try to rule that out. It's been about two weeks and I'm starting to see hair come back in all the affected areas. I've had some hair return in the past but not like this.

I checked the ingredients in my deodorant and the first one is propylene glycol. What's interesting is about 4 years ago I changed deodorants to get away from the antiperspirants with aluminum. So, I went with just the deodorant which doesn't have the aluminum active ingredient.

It's too early to know if this is really the answer for me, but I thought I'd ask if you use a deodorant with propylene glycol or switched deodorants recently? I should add that my father recently switched from a solid baking soda deodorant to a gel that contains a glycol about the same time he started to notice his patch (we just put this together last week). I can't say if propylene glycol is the culprit, but I know it's not in the antiperspirants I used to use prior to the time my Alopecia started.

Hope this helps.
Hi Bill,

I remember thinking this was the culprit to my Alopecia too. That or my new cell phone and/or the new additive free cigarettes I smoked.
Anyway I use this deorderant which contains purified water and natural mineral salts nothing else. Still no hair.
I guess I was wrong.
Hey Jeffrey,

Well, it's been over a month since I stopped using that deodorant that contains propylene glycol and my hair is coming back slowly. Over the past year since it spread from my sideburns to my head, I've grown out my existing hair to cover the patches. I do notice a daily shedding but I haven't noticed new patches develop or the existing ones getting larger since I stopped using the deodorant. In some of the patches on my head, thin brown hairs are making a comeback. My eyebrows are slowly filling in with coarser brown hairs and parts of my beard are turning from blond stubble to dark again. Both eyelashes are slowly returning.

Still, the re-growth is a very slow process. I guess I'll take it month-to-month and see how it goes.
Hey Bill,

This sounds like good news!!! Be patient

Hi,

I read your story, and wondered if you had any updates to it?? I got alopecia barbae (in beard) about 1.5 years ago. Tried cortisone shots in my beard, plus topical creams, but I haven't seen any growth back. The only thing I noticed, is where it first started, that skin color has returned to more of its normal color. When the balding first appeared, the skin areas affected were more white in color. Now the skin color seems to be more like it originally was.

Would really like to figure this out, and your ideas of changing deodorants peaked my interest. I've thought of changing shaving cream too.... I had a physical exam, and blood work done, it didn't reveal anything. I was hoping it would. Been to the dermatologist as well.

ANY ideas you have would be GREATLY appreciated.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Thanks in advance,
Jeff

I lost part of my beard over 20 yrs ago. It grew back but the hair in the area was much thinner than the rest of my beard. Last year, I lost ~50% of my beard. Again, some grew back, some didn't as I still have two patches with only a few hairs.
