Dear AA Moms (and Dads, if any :-) ),
I am at my 21 week (first child), I am feeling very happy (it was very long and complex to get pregnant). However, since the 4th week of my pregnancy I started to lose a very high quantity of hairs (paradoxically, as during pregnancy hairs are in general very well protected by female hormones) . Two dermatologists confirmed I have alopecia areata. This is very discouraging , I have to say. This auto-immune sickness is now becoming "Alopecia totalis".
As I understand from the research and medical literature it is very rare to have AA/AT for the first time (and no genetical history) during pregnancy. I was not able to find cases of women developing AA or AT during pregnancy, except two 3-year old testimonials in 2 websites and I really wonder how AA/AT may evolve after my baby will be born..
Has another women any experience with alopecia areata/AT during pregnancy to share? I would like to know if , in their case, after pregnancy the hair started to grow again. Also doctors say I can use topical corticosteroid lotion (topic treatment), but the treatment does not work.
Any other treatments seems not to be possible during pregnancy. I tried homeopathy, but for now no results. I would be very grateful for any suggestion and experience you could share. I have to say I feel quite hard this situation, although I really try to focus on the baby to come.Thank you in advance!

Hi
I'm sure you are feeling very concerned about this situation. I'm afraid at this time there is no tried and true cure or effective treatment for alopecia.
In my experience there seems to be 'hotspots' in people's lifes where alopecia will begin (especially with woman). Puberty, pregnancy, menopause can often be the starting points for alopecia....nobody can really tell us why but this is what I have noticed with the many people I have met over the years who are dealing with alopecia.
Doctors and anybody else can't tell you what is going to happen...that's the worst thing (I know). Do keep in mind though that as this condition began it can end. There are many ladies that do grow their hair back after pregnancy and there are those that grow their hair during pregnancy....but everybody is different, so nothing is written in stone.
I want to congratulate you. It is a wonderful experience you are going through and I so hope that your alopecia does not define everything about this pregnancy. Do your best to educate yourself (as I see you are already doing). Then become proactive around how you want to present yourself ....whether that be without hair or with a scarf, hat or hairpiece....the choice is yours.
I wish you well with your pregnancy .
