So this is kind of a rant, I want to become a pilot when i'm older but to do that i'd have to join the air cadets because private lessons are over £100,000 and we can't pay that when its free in Air Cadets.
But I can't join because of the "hair rules" I HATE IT!
the rules are:
you cant have any strands of hair out.
your hair must be scraped back from your face in a tight bun.
your hair must NOT touch your ears.
your hair must not touch your shirt collar.
all remaining hair must be tucked under the beret.
and that's why I can't join because I can't do those things..
how am i supposed to do that when i have to wear wigs and have no hair, how am i supposed to scrape it back without the edges showing and having it not touching my ears?
UCHHHHHHH!!!

Rough gig Liv knowing you I think you will find a way to get in.

Hi Liv

You can do this. I believe you wear a Freedom Wig so, I'll message you to try and help.

Don't let your hair or lack of it keep you from your dreams!

Rosy

there are wigs which allows you to do so. Like freedom wig, follea, wig grippers and etc.Though I think these rules apply to hairy people why not ask the person in charge and explain your condition I find majority of people don't care about it as much as long as you perform in the job. In my work place after getting the job I highlighted my condition and my supervisor made sure that no one bothered me.My question to you why would you let hair get in the way of a job? or your dream. These days I just go with a hat or bald...Can't be bothered with a wig. Majority of the comments were awesome!!!!! you loook coool and etc.Don't get me wrong I understand if you aren't that brave and would like this to be private. I say Test waters and see how things are and see the person in charge. Or try looking into wig options like freedom wig, Now I have a friend who has it.,And no one can tell the difference and she can keep it to herself. And I do have many friends who pretty much don't like talking about their alopecia,

Liv, I work for an international airline and we have very strict rules about appearance. But, for a medical condition then you must by law make allowances otherwise you are discriminating based on a person's medical condition.
If you or your parent approach a senior member of the Air Cadets they will relax this rule for you, I am certain of that.
Also, we have a senior Captain with my airline that has alopecia areata - so please don't think hair loss is going to be a hinderance in the airline industry.
Good luck with your ambitions, go for it.

If I was you I would just go without the wig. I let my alopecia stop me from doing a lot of stuff over the years until I was finally able to accept it, and I really regret that I ever let it hold me back. I don't know what is all involved in the Air Cadets, but if you are going to be doing physical stuff then it would be more comfortable to go without a wig as well. If that doesn't sound like an option for you,I am sure that if you contacted them that they would be willing to work with you. A lot of people are happy to do whatever they can to help people out that have special circumstances. It never hurts to phone and see what they say. Most importantly, if you get a "no" just keep moving up the authority line until you get a "yes". Eventually you will reach someone with the power to give you whatever you need. The key is being persistent enough to get there.

Best,
Dielle

This crazy experience reminds me of a personal experience some years ago:

I had sold my business so as to care for my terminally ill mother on a full-time basis. Subject to occasionally taking time out to work on the production line at a local factory. The city was Asian dominated, as was the factory and indeed I was honestly the only white face there.

On my first day I was instructed to wear a hair net. I explained (in case the chap was short sighted) that I had no hair, nor was I capable of growing any.

The chap insisted that I must wear the hair net.

OK I said. In that case I also want a beard net.

I was told that I couldn't have one as I didn't have a beard.

After much verbal table tennis I got my beard net, with both parties believing the other to be utterly mad.

From that point only all one could see of me was my eyes as I was swathed in netting. This was repeated each time I worked there. No Asian ever spoke to me and Although I never felt like an alopecian I was constantly on the look out for a swarm of bees.

Don't let alopecia get in the way of your dreams. I'm sure there's someway or somehow you can work this out- just go for it or you may regret it later. Good luck!

I was in air cadets (in Canada) as a teenager and they let me pin my wig back as best into a bun as I could.

otherwise maybe you could just go bald? If it was what you REALLY wanted I think you manage- and the other cadets would get used to you pretty fast.

I am an American Air Force pilot.  I go to work every day bald. If you want to talk with me about flying, alopecia or anything, please let me know.

If you want to do this you will find a way. Never give up your dreams because of Alopecia.
