I have been dealing with Alopecia for several years now!! I have now noticed a pattern. I get my Alopecia spots in the fall. I can tell when it is happening; I get a tingling sensation in the area of where the hair loss is going to occur. Anyone else with this seasonal Alopecia??!!

Mine used to be before I lost it all again. In the fall it seemed to flare up more than other times of the year. My allergies are awful in the fall so it seemed to go along with my allergies. In the fall, the hair falls out....kind of funny if you think about it.
I have read this happening to several people. Some think it's summer sun and vitamin D, but (like Amber), I am more inclined to think it has more to do with allergy flare ups. My AU began for the first time this past April and I ended up shaving by mid-August, so I don't have a long experience with this. However, I had plenty of "peach fuzz" just a few weeks ago which is now gone. This "trend" is something I intend to monitor for myself as I continue with this ordeal.
Wow, I never thought about it before... but now that you mention it, when AA first started, it was about August, and since then I guess seems about right, this past August I lost a huge area on the side of my head, biggest area since the very first one. Also I mentioned the "tingling" to my Derm, and she looked at my like thats not possible... I'll have to pay batter attention to the seasons...
yes, my alopecia areata always started in the winter, usually mid December - my hair would fall out and i would have to wear a wig until May or June. My hair would come back and always alot of hair. This loss being my 5th however, did not come out in the winter, this time it was May and i lost it all including eyebrows and eyelashes, but a few.

I hate to even think this but mine could be called universalis now! I just have a gut feeling it's not coming back like before. :(
I have had alopecia for 9 years. My hair has fallen out (and grown back) 5 times (3 times AT, twice AA). My alopecia ALWAYS flares up in the fall. Usually October to November (this time of year :( ) and the grows back in the summer months. I also have slight alergies this time of year. I absolutely think that the fall as something to do with it, but I just thought I was crazy! I'm glad to hear that other people are experiencing the same thing. Where do you guys live? I live in Pennsylvania and I always wonder if I moved somewhere warmer, with no change in seasons, if it would help...

I live in PA also, and exp the seasonal spot loses too. I started getting AA when I moved to WESTERN PA for college (note: where there is little sunlight throughout the fall and winter months) and started losing hair during my sophomore year.

During the summer months I work seasonal jobs at beach parks (DE, OBX, etc) and notice amazing regrowth. I am refusing steroids now and want to see if the pattern continues.

Sounds dumb but, would tanning allow your body to use certain vitamins properly? Because I might consider doing it once in a while. I never tanned in a booth before but if it could mimic sunlight that might be good for the body... Who knows. :P

Oh my gosh, I think I have that too!!!

Just a theory of mine though. :)

Wow... really interesting! I have been struggling with AA for almost 3 years, and since I live in Malta (in the mediterranean) our fall winter starts late November, and I get allergies as well. This time last year I was shaving my head and wearing wigs, and funny enough my hair loss just increased again and I am struggling with what method to attack with. I never thought there could be a correlation between seasonal allergies and hair loss.

I was thinking the same thing abuot my daughter. Her hair grew back in the summer but lsoing it again this fall. I hate that there are no answers to this!!

I have also noticed a pattern in the late fall/winter when the loss accelerates and re growth occurs during the warmer months. I live in MA. I agree with the sensation symptom too; I feel a soreness/tingling in the areas of my scalp where hair is starting to get thinner and patches develop! I'm in my 6th year of a loss/regrowth cycle, having gone AU twice. Now I'm in a large bald patch occurrence with decent hair coverage, which is new for me.

It is really irritating that there is no answer to something millions are suffering from :( My AA is continuing to get worse, multiple spots on my head, half of the eyelashes on my right eye, and various spots in my pubic area. I caved and got percribed Prednisone for the 3rd time in 1.5 years... I hate being on medicine- and dealing with side effects, but I hate seeing hair all over the floor, on my pillow and feeling it fall on my shoulders too! Good luck to you all and hope this seasonal bout ends soon!
