Hello my friends,
I am on my 3rd wig in about 2.5 yrs and feeling very frustrated. This wig thing is really hit and miss!
Below is my wig experience to date. With all these troubles, Im torn between what will work best for me going forward. Short, long? Blonde, dark? Synthetic, human hair? What for you has given you the most pleasure and reliability, for the longest time?
No. 1 was my first wig- shoulder length blonde synthetic from Jean Renau.
Problems: very shiny, stiff rough fibre, the lace front scratched the hell out of my scalp and caused irritation/eczema
No. 2 was my first human hair wig, from Fortune Wigs, USA, bought online (im in South Africa). Comfort range (fine human hair) Long (18inch) and blonde. Monofilament Cap is very comfortable.
Problems: nightmare to wash as it tangled like crazy and i was doing it right and using good products, but would take me over an hour to untangle it once it was wet! It was very dry,
Secondly, the blonde went very Yellow! In fact, when people spoke to me they couldnt take their eyes off my hair, the colour looked so bad. I eventually got too embarrassed to wear it.
No. 3, human hair, also from Fortune wigs, the one i currently wear. Only been wearing it for 4 months. Long (18inch), ombre- dark brown on top and dirty blonde below. Monofilament cap is very comfortable and soft
Problems: again the colour. The dark on top has lightened dramatically in such a short time. Its now looking reddish and just a horrid color. Dramatically different to when i bought it.
Secondly its really dry all over but especially on the ends. Due to this, it knots like crazy. I use argan oil but the effects dont last long.
Am i expecting too much perhaps? Are all these issues common?
Just wish my darn hair would must grown back already!
Appreciate your advise and guidance.

Hi Kim,
As a wig wearer for 7+ years, I do not think you are expecting too much. But based on your descriptions it seems you are buying their lower line which is very processed human hair. This kind of hair has been dipped in acid and all kinds of chemicals, then coated with silicone to make it look smooth and silky. When you've washed it after several times, the silicone comes out and you are basically left with straw! The color also oxidizes and changes much faster. I don'k know what your budget is, but if you can save up, it's much more worth it to get virgin hair. It will last you much longer and look so much more natural. I've also recently got a wig made with a very soft, lightweight kind of fleece. Let me know if you want me to send some pics! Good luck with your future wigs!
Since you are wearing light colors you have no possibility of getting virgin blond hair in a wig. There are some companies that offer virgin hair but since the majority of hair comes from Asia or India there are no blond people giving up their hair for wigs.
Also, once the hair has been decolorized it is severely damaged and will not hold color. This is true even with hair on the head, holding a good blond is challenging. Coloring wigs and hairpieces is very different than coloring hair on the head and must be done by a skilled professional. Even then the color will fade quickly.
HD is a good company but like all companies in this business, consistent quality is an issue. Their pieces hold up as good or bad as any other company. I have worked with their blond pieces that completely fell apart in one month. The hair is coarse, and as with all blonds it loses shine and color fast.If you go through an online vendor then find you need professional help with color renewal or styling it will be difficult and very expensive to find someone qualified that will take you on since you did not buy from them.
Debs answer is a good one, however I wear long synthetic and can recondition them to look better than new. I am a professional and to recondition successfully lots of experience is required. Again I suggest using a professional.
Last week I recolored a $6000.00 Follea piece. I barely could get the color on the hair due to tangling and the piece was brand new.
Are you expecting too much? If you believe any wig will be easy out of the box and look totally natural in all circumstances, yes. If you are willing to invest time and money to learn how to make the piece work, it can be done. But all to often I have seen products sold by online companies that need professional help to make them work for the client. I do not believe that anything less than a face to face consultation where the professional can see and feel the hair and work with it on the client will ever really work. If you look at peoples hair today (not wigs) most people don't even know how bad their hair looks. Some professional may have done it but the results look really bad. I believe it is the same with added hair. Most of the photos I see online (human hair) have the wearer in one style, the side part. Not every face is flattered by this style, and I can see where the piece meets the forehead in each photo and screams wig to me.
With synthetics you have a greater range of possible styles, but they still need adjusting to really make them look real.
All the problems you state are common for wigs, but do have solutions. There are ways to fix shinyness, soften fibers, reduce tangling, fix / change the color of human hair wigs, and much more. I suggest you join some of the facebook groups for people who wear wigs - like Wig Wisdom or Wig & Topper Help for Those with Hair Loss. They're a great group of gals who support each other and share tips on wig care, wig wearing, wig buying, etc.
