My husband has AU for 22 years now. In the last year he has noticed his nails are becoming brittle and he has now almost lost his thumbnails. We have noticed also, that he is starting to get it on his other nails. Is this a problem with Alopeica???

Thanks for your reply!!! My husband seen on one site where AU can cause the loss of fingernails. Do you have AU? and how long?
I am so sorry!!!! Just know that Bald is SEXY!!!! My husband in the summer gets a nice tan on his head and uuummmm...... I am lost!!! When I met him he had already lost his hair. He has had AU since he was 18.It started with AA when he was 5. It is nice to have people that understand though. I will keep you in my prayers. God Bless
Hi - I have had AU for 32 years and never had a problem with nails - it may be a vitamin deficiency brought on by a change of diet or lack of a particular food - I suggest your husband speaks to his Doctor for advice - its probably easily solved but should not be ignored.
best of luck, Ally
Hi!
Have you thought about Candidas Albicanus? I'm not sure I spelt it correctly. This concerns allergies to food and can affect the nails. I agree with the others you should go see a doctor.
Good Luck, Karen
Yes it is, the protein building the nails is pretty similar to the one building the hairs and can also be attacked ... you can re-inforce the nails successfully with a product called ecrinal by laboratoires asepta ... no idea if you can source it or a similar product from where you live but here you get it at the pharmacists.
Does he still have the white moon shaped matrix on the tumbnails? If not this basically means the nails are not growing anymore. The more impulses you give to teh nails the faster they grow: typing, light work, sports tension ...
Success!
Tommy
Do you have to have a script to get this product???
i am 23 and i have alopecia universalis for three months now .My finger nails have began to brittle so i think this is a direct effect of the alopecia.
HI,
THANKS FOR THE TAKING THE TIME TO REPLY. I HATE TO HEAR YOU ARE HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM AS MY HUSBAND. HOWEVER, IT IS NICE TO KNOW THAT THERE ARE PEOPLE OUT THERE WITH THE SAME CONCERNS AND ISSUES HE HAS!!
I have had some issues with my nails also. I have had the ridges and white spots. I also had something that's hard to explain. I'll try. If you look at your tip of your nails, they are white down to where they attach to the end of your finger. The white was going down further onto the skin. It was almost like my nail was coming loose from the nail bed and they were sensitive. I talked to my derm about it and he suggested taking Biotin. I have been taking it for over a year now and they have completly cleared up and they are very strong. Hope that helps.
Do you have to have a script for Biotin or is it over the counter? My husbands nails have these lines in them and are easy to bend back. He has ripped them off several times. Was this like you ordeal???
I never had one to come off, but they were easy to bend. My main issue was the way my nails seemed to have an uneven line where they attached to the nail bed. It's so hard to explain how that looked.I buy it over the counter in the 1,000 mcg strength at Wal-Mart. The brand is Spring Valley. I would think any brand would be fine. I take one in the morning and one at night. As with any suppliment, it takes a little time for it to get into your system. It has worked for me. Hope it helps your husband. It would probably be a good idea for him to check with his doc. just to make sure that it wouldn't interfer with anything else.
Hi there
Ive had ali-p 23years and my nails have deteriorated over the last 5years. There are pittin marks on the surface and dont grow to any length before crumbling. My derm confirmed it was related to my alopecia.
Have tried false nails but they just ache too much.
