AU regrowth

My son who is 16 has AU.  I have been reading about "dead hair follicles".  I asked the dermatotogist who is not sure if follicles actually die.  Has anyone with AU or AT had regrowth after being completely bald?

I hope I'm not too late to answer your question!!

I had AU at the age of 8 and it lasted for about 2 years. My AU transitioned into AT before transitioning into AA. I've lost my hair multiple time and was switching between AT and AA for a while. 

I do have some hair at the moment. So, yes, you can grow hair after having AU. Yet, the recovery rate is extremely low and your hair might not grow back in the same texture or density of the one you had (just as in my case).
