I have a Freedom Wig/Vaccum Wig and am in the market for a back-up, less expensive, breathable, summer fun wig. Does anyone have any suggestions? Please pass them along. I'm getting a bit nervous as everyone is telling me I need a back-up. And, you all know how the "Murphy Law" works.
Thanks for your input.

See my synthetic choices for under $300 (usually about $190 in my area), on my page. I have been trying 2- and 3-tone wigs lately, so they look more natural (and less shiny).
Thank you ladies. I guess that my hesitation is can I wear a synthetic wig on a bald scalp? What size? do I have to use tape (double-sided)? How does it stay on.
@ tallgirl I went on your page - you're in West Coast I'm East. So I will try to go to my local spot here and look around.
@ Aimee, I went on the site and I would like to get a hat with wig attached but didn't see the right color for me. But I'll keep looking.
Thank you for both for your advise and Aimee you're right I'm getting nervous about not having a back-up.
Hi Pat, I only wear synthetic wigs. I tried the custom made ones about 15 years ago and didn't have much luck. But I am sure they have come a long way since. Anyways, I use double sided tape up front for that little extra hold. Most people think it's my own hair and I get a lot of compliments on color and cut. I too like the 2 and 3 tone wigs.
I don't want to mess with tape or glue, so I just cinch the elastic (sewn into the wig cap) on my noggin and hope for the best! You will have to have a wig store tell you what size your head is, according to the wig company (some are smaller, just like dress companies). I prefer to try on rather than order blind, but you could just Google "wigs for women" and try to find one that is not a COSTUME wig place with cheap wigs, but a legit shop with professional stylists and quality wigs.
I would suggest the "gripper" from Peggy Knight. You can pull on it and it does not come off. It is 100% human hair and is beautiful. You won't have to sacrafice security with this piece.

Let me know if I can help!!!

Alyce, I think the gripper is the same concept as the vaccum wig, no? What type of material is the hair on? do you have the gripper on on your profile pic? It looks alot like mine, just lighter. How $ and how long have you had it - it looks great. I love the hair on the vaccum wig I have. And, yours looks so real. Let me know.
The "gripper" is a net based human hairpiece that has a 1" silicone band all the way around the perimeter.
This gives an unbelivable amount of security. It is much cooler than the vacuum. You can go on the Peggy Knight website and look at it. The hair in the gripper is the same hair that is in the vacuum piece.

Also if you are on Alopecia World, the gripper is featured as the "the dancing girl." She is showing how the gripper stays on.

Let me know if I can help.

Yes you can wear a synthetic wig on a bald head. I prefer the wigs that have a mono top area, from companies such as Rene of Paris or Raquel Welch-because on their mono top wigs they have a piece of thin skin across the front that grips the scalp-whereas most non mono wigs I have, have a soft velvety area there. That fabric seems to actually be more slippy on a bald head. Also, some non mono wigs try to compensate by having tonnes of wefts sewn on to the top area, and that makes for a hot wig for the summer months.

I don't rely on pulling the adjuster straps tight to get a good fit-I find that makes the wig feel like it is riding up the back and on the verge of popping. I take in excess with needle and thread just above the nape-this makes the wig sit down better-then I use some tape at the nape if wearing the wig out, or for the whole day.

Of course there is no poly area there for using tape-so I sew in small areas of stretchy fabric band aid material, and attach the tape to those areas.

I guess we all feel the heat differently, but I have a wig that has net with a thin skin perimeter, I guess like the gripper, and I still find that too hot in the summer.
Hi Pat,

I am a hairdresser and have worked on a number of human hair pieces since 1965. I just recenty cut and styled a Gripper from Peggy Knight. You may want to check this out.
